Seeking Indigenous Video Mentors

Seeking Indigenous Video Mentors

May 12, 2021 in SaskMusic News

We are seeking Indigenous video directors to act as remote mentors, assisting in the creation of music performance videos for our 2021 National Indigenous Peoples Day concert. These individuals could be either emerging or established professionals.

  • Each mentor would be matched with up to 6 music artists residing in different locations in Sask, and work remotely (via phone, video conference and emails) with the artist to develop a concept and filming plan for one of the artist’s songs.
  • The mentor would work with each artist on things such as planning out shots and angles, adjusting lighting, and capturing the audio for the song (or syncing a shoot to their existing professional audio recording), and generally be available to support the artist by answering questions and giving feedback as they film their song.
  • The mentor will assess what resources the artist has available, and determine if additional gear is needed to accomplish the vision for each artist to film in their home/community (ie green screens, lighting, recording software etc); then work with SaskMusic to facilitate getting needed items to the artist.
  • After filming, the mentor will obtain the footage from the artist and complete edits/apply after-effects etc to bring the concept to completion and prepare it for inclusion in our concert.
  • An audio editor will also be provided to the team if necessary to assist in mastering the audio portion.
  • The mentor will be responsible for ensuring that a completed video for each artist is provided to SaskMusic by June 17/21.

The mentor’s goal is two-part:

  • To assist each artist in completing one quality live performance music video that would then be included in our NIPD online concert, and which can be used by the artist afterward for promotional purposes;
  • To help each artist to develop their skillset in creating quality artistic content at home. For example, being able to set up for and produce their own live-stream concerts or film future showcases/promotional videos.

Selected mentors will receive financial compensation for their work, based on the number of artists they are assigned to.

The mentors’ work with artists would take place between (approximately) May 20-June 17, with dedicated video editing time by the mentor being required between June 12-17.

We realize there are many variables in this program about which you may have questions. If interested, please direct your questions, and bios/resumes, to our Indigenous Music Coordinator, Darwin Roy, via email: darwin@saskmusic.org.
