What we do (the short explanation)
SaskMusic is the non-profit, member-based organization that represents, promotes and develops the music industry of Saskatchewan. We work for Saskatchewan music artists and the music industry on provincial, national and international levels. Essentially, we do as much as we can to help you get where you need to go. That means we help our members develop their skills and we provide the resources they need to succeed in the music business.
We offer programming including artist listings, career consultations, workshops, marketing and export assistance, networking opportunities and much more. Our artists and music professionals hail from across the province, and work in pretty much every genre you can imagine. We are a source of information and resources for both the public, and the music industry. If you have questions about the scene here, we can help.
Our members include musicians, recording engineers, graphic designers, songwriters, sound techs, music teachers, and so on. Whether you play guitar occasionally, or have three albums under your belt, we invite you to join our association.
Membership Benefits (paid memberships)
One-on-One Consultations (Music Mentor Program)
Your career is unique. Our staff are available to meet with you to discuss whatever you need to tackle and we have an arsenal of additional music professionals available to chat with you. Members receive up to 10 consults per year with our mentors (a value of over $550!) plus unlimited consults with staff. Just book a consult whenever you need us, or simply give us a call when you've got an urgent question. Just one consult is worth the price of your annual membership!
Workshops and Educational Events
Our workshops and events can help you develop your do-it-yourself skills in the industry. Workshop topics rotate from year to year based on requests and industry trends, with typical content such as how to market yourself, applying for grants, songwriting skills, live performance skills, publishing, pitching for TV/film music placements, and more. Workshops are often offered free for members, or at an enormous discount. Most events are presented in Regina and Saskatoon as well as online, so you can participate from wherever you are.
Funding Guidance
SaskMusic is the provincial representative of national funding organization FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings) and can offer guidance with applications to other agencies including Creative Saskatchewan. While we don't give out grants ourselves, we can provide tips for preparing your applications and/or give them an objective review before you submit.
Information
We collect and share industry news, performance opportunities, tips, interviews, and articles on business and creative topics on our social media and website. Members receive priority when submitting for a Feature on our socials - for music/video releases.
Through the SaskMusic E-Release and additional special bulletins, members also receive advance notice of opportunities, submission deadlines, and special members-only events and projects. Our e-release was one of the first of its kind in Canada.
Of course, we encourage you to follow us on social media as we post time-sensitive and breaking news. (Links at top right hand corner of this website.)
Promotion
We have one of the busiest websites in the Canadian music industry (averaging over a million views annually). Two of our most-viewed sections are the Live Music Calendar, featuring shows around Saskatchewan as well as gig listings for Saskatchewan artists on tour, and the Saskatchewan Music Directory, a "yellow pages" for all things music. Members receive beefed-up listings in both areas, as well as have the ability to submit press releases directly into our system.
We are constantly promoting Saskatchewan music to media right across Canada, for example, Saskatchewan artists showcasing at major events like Departure Fest, The Great Escape and SXSW; award nominees; album releases, and generally cool stuff happening with Saskatchewan music. We are out there working on behalf of Saskatchewan artists at many national and international events.
Export Program
We have an in-market consultant to assist, promote and develop export-ready Saskatchewan recording artists’ careers in the UK and Europe. Services include, but are not limited to, research and introductions to appropriate in-market contacts, writing and formalizing relevant pitches and assistance with logistics, backline rental and immigration. We have presented at many international events and can explain what it means to be export-ready - and help you get there.
Special Projects
In addition to regular programming, we help national and local partners with initiatives that vary year to year. For example, we've worked on things like:
- Assisting on the JUNO Awards and CCMA Host Committees for their events in Saskatchewan;
- Programming the Songwriters Stage at Country Thunder Saskatchewan;
- Producing the Next Big Thing talent competition for Pure 92-7;
- Sponsoring PRIDE events around the province;
- Co-presenting the CBC's "On a Cold Road" concerts for broadcast;
- Co-presenting the "Prairie Social" showcase in Ottawa for Prairie Scene;
- Sponsoring showcases at Canadian Music Week, The Great Escape (London UK), PrimaveraPro (Barcelona Spain), Americana Music Conference (Nashville TN), Reeperbahn (Germany), Folk Alliance International (USA) and many many more.
