The SOCAN Songwriting Prize honours the best music created by emerging Canadian songwriters. Going back to 2006, the contest has featured the music of some of Canada’s top songwriters, with the winner determined by general public voting.

This year, Regina’s Andy Shauf is a nominee. Shauf has just released “The Party”, his full-length debut on ANTI-, and Arts & Crafts in Canada, appearing at #1 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart. This hugely anticipated follow-up to “The Bearer of Bad News” was recorded at home in Regina’s Studio One, with Shauf playing all the instruments (with the exception of the strings, handled by Colin Nealis). Outside of the studio, the master song craftsman has spent much of his recent time playing to rapt audiences in Canada, the U.S. and overseas, to both fan and critical acclaim.

For the Songwriting Prize, two independent panels of Canadian music scene experts – one for French language, and one for English language - nominated songs that they believe represent the most creative and artistic work by emerging songwriters in Canada over the past year. Songwriters or their representatives do not submit songs for consideration, and all genres of music are eligible. Each panel then individually voted for their top picks, generating the top 10 for each English and French lists, and moving these on to public voting for the next two weeks. The winning English and French songwriters will each receive $10,000 in cash, a choice between two brands of Godin Guitars, a Yamaha PSR-S970 keyboard, and a $500 gift card from Long & McQuade.

GENERAL PUBLIC VOTING
Open now until 3:00PM (5:00 PM EST) on June 23, 2016.
One vote per person per day per category is permitted from each unique IP address.
