Emerging Indigenous Artist Studio Experience

Deadline midnight, Sunday June 11

Deadline: June 11, 2023

In honour of National Indigenous History Month, we would like to create an opportunity for emerging Indigenous artists to get time in a professional studio setting to gain recording experience, with a goal of creating with a good quality original music track and video footage of the live session that can be used in social media marketing.

We are partnering with the Recording Arts Institute of Saskatchewan, the only dedicated school for recording arts in the province (based in Saskatoon), which offers programs for Audio Engineering and Motion Picture Arts. This partnership will utilize RAIS students and/or instructors behind the board and camera for their practical experience while building the confidence and experience of new artists.

We hope to record 4 artists/bands in June. Artists will be selected from those who submit, below.

Each artist selected will receive:

  • a recording slot booked at RAIS with the aim to complete a basic recording of one original song. SaskMusic/RAIS will meet with artists ahead of time to go over pre-recording preparation tips so you are ready to make the most of your time slot.
  • a copy of the recording
  • a short edited video reel of the recording process
  • a SaskMusic membership
  • Artists will be matched up with mentors from within and outside of our Music Mentors program so they can discuss songwriting, performing and other goals to further progress their career.
  • Travel assistance for those coming from outside of Saskatoon which may include gas, meal allowances and a hotel night, depending on distance travelled.

Artists must be available and commit to being in studio on one of the following days/times:

  • Thurs June 15 9am-1pm
  • Fri June 16 9am-1pm
  • Mon June 19 9am-1pm

To submit, you will need a phone/webcam rough recording of one original song that you hope to work on in this project.
