The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, Saskatoon Jazz Society, friends, family, and performing artists welcome and invite you to celebrate the extraordinary man and musician who filled our hearts with joy and laughter until his passing in February.

Born in Timmins, Ontario, Maurice Drouin started playing piano at the age 8. Playing professionally at the age of 19, his first professional band, called the “Maurice Drouin Trio” with Hubert Cook (bass) and Ron Zack (drums). It was in this trio, over 20 years and playing 6 nights a week that Maurice’s love of Jazz and how to entertain an audience was developed and nurtured.

To further his career in the music industry Maurice moved to Detroit where he carved out a dedicated audience over two years. In 1980, he packed up and moved to Saskatoon for a brief stay… and somehow, never left! Finding a strong jazz scene in Saskatoon, Maurice formed the “Maurice Drouin Jazz Show” and developed an extraordinary music career built on special friendships with promoters, agents, club owners, restaurants owners, hotel owners, the Saskatoon Prairieland Exhibition, the Saskatoon Club, and many others. In acknowledgement of his tremendous contributions to our province’s jazz scene, Maurice was awarded the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival’s 2006 Special Recognition Award.

With a career that featured thousands of performances over more than 60 years, Maurice Drouin created a lasting musical legacy. We are honoured to pay tribute to that legacy in our presentation of His Favourite Songs.

“Music is my passion, music is my life, and music is my serenity.”

-Maurice Drouin
