Regina Folk Festival presents Winterruption: Begonia, Close Talker, and Bears in Hazenmore
- January 18, 2018 - Doors at: 7:30pm / Showtime: 8:00pm
On one end of the spectrum, there are varieties of the begonia which can be dark, grievous and rough around the edges. And on the other end, it is a petite and elegant flower. In between, the plant attempts to harmonize its two poles, forming an array of varieties that each borrow from the delicate and the unseemly. It is in this same vein that Begonia (Alexa Dirks) finds herself, trying to find a balance. Known for her voice in the Juno Award-winning Chic Gamine, Dirks has a timbre that both recalls the golden age of soul and is proud and courageous.
Close Talker is the exalted indie rock trio from Saskatoon, Canada. Formed in 2012, the band has made great strides in a short period of time: two releases, numerous tours throughout North America, Europe, and the UK, and international attention from revered and critically acclaimed blogs and publications. Close Talker is a band born and raised in the Canadian prairies, made up of childhood friends Will Quiring, Matthew Kopperud, and Christopher Morien. Since becoming a trio in the summer of 2015, the band has now honed their craft, creating a more vast and iconic sound that is turning heads and drawing crowds around the world.
Bears in Hazenmore are an ambient alternative rock group based out of Regina, Saskatchewan, Treaty 4. Since their formation in 2014, the band has become known for creating atmospheric soundscapes and their ability to draw audiences in with intimate lyrics and enticing builds. Operating as a five-piece ensemble that includes extensive use of reverb-saturated guitars, dynamic percussion, and ethereal brass and woodwind textures, they draw strong comparisons to groups such as City and Colour, Aidan Knight, and Bon Iver.
