This page will be a collector for news and developments that we want to share regarding AI and its relationship to and impact within the music industry. This is a deep and extensive subject, so we won't attempt to cover everything, but will highlight some items that we feel you should know about.

California, September 2024: Two precedent-making bills to help actors and performers protect their digital likenesses in audio and visual productions, including those who are deceased. The legislation is designed to help ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital media technologies in entertainment by giving workers more protections.

Canada, September 2023: JUNO Awards add AI Eligibility

Key points: Elements of AI can be used in eligible projects, but cannot be the sole or core component. Human(s) must be the primary creative contributor(s) of the submitted work. AI contribution cannot be solely responsible for an eligible project meeting the category eligibility.

Applicants must be able to provide proof that a human is the primary creative contributor of the submitted project. For technical categories the applicant must be able provide proof that the technical work is the result of human effort.

Government of Canada, January 2024: In 2021, the Government of Canada launched a consultation on Canada's copyright framework to gather Canadians' insights on how to adapt it for the digital age. The government continues working toward amending the Copyright Act for the benefit of all Canadians.

The consultation focused on the impacts of recent developments in AI on the creative industries and the economic impacts that these technologies have, or could have, on Canadians, and it looked at whether change is required to further improve or reinforce copyright policy for a modern, evolving Canadian economy. A report summarizing what (they) heard from all stakeholders, both through the written submissions and during the roundtables, will also be released in the coming months.
