An important element to our Gala Showcase is the presentation of the Kenny Shields Special Recognition Award for contributions to the professional arts. Kenny Shields was a longtime member of Local 553 and after his death at the age of 69 the Executive Board of the Saskatoon Musicians' Association voted to honour his legacy by renaming the award in his name in 2017. The Saskatoon Musicians' Association is pleased to announce that the recipient of the Kenny Shields Award goes to a passionate advocate for the arts from Saskatoon in 2019, and the first musician to receive the award. Lynn Ewing is a Fellow in Trinity College in London (UK), and holds diplomas in piano and voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. A longtime teacher, accompanist, and performer, she found time to serve as the President of the Saskatoon Symphony Society, the Saskatoon Opera Association, and the Saskatoon Registered Teachers Association.
Previous recipients of the Kenny Shields Award include: Don Kerr (2018), Shelly Loeffler (2017), Jim Hodges (2016).

Saskatoon Musicians' Association History:
The Saskatoon Musicians' Association has been powered by music since 1910. Along the way the Saskatoon Musicians' Association has been home to Canadian rock 'n roll icons such as Brian Plummer, The Northern Pikes, and Kenny Shields, jazz music great Gordie Brandt, and mainstay folk artists from the 60s like Humphrey and the Dumptrucks, and Don Freed, and more recently The Deep Dark Woods and Kacy & Clayton. Our current membership ranges from the members of Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra to The Sheepdogs, and includes just about every recording artist from roots to blues to country.
