The Regina Jazz Society Presents: JazzFest Regina 2016 June 15-19 with the festival kicking off Wednesday, June 15 10:15 a.m. Come by for  an opening ribbon cutting ceremonies with Dr. Jack Semple at F.W. Hill Mall 

For the eighth year in a row, the Regina Jazz Society hosts Regina’s own summer Jazz Festival. Five days of cool swinging to beat the summer heat. This year Regina’s JazzFest showcases many of the hidden treasures of Regina’s local jazz scene both in local clubs and venues and with local artists in the heart of Downtown Regina.

Mixed with the local flavours of Regina’s Jazz scene are headlining guests featured at the Riddell Centre, U of R, Ramada Plaza’s Ballroom, Le Bistro, and Bushwakker Brew Pub. See and hear locals on the City Plaza Square Stage, F.W. Hill Mall, Hill Towers II, Southland Mall, Wascana Bandshell, Legislative Landing, & the Crossing, as well as in 13 local clubs from Tuesday through Sunday night.

The event kicks off at the F.W. Hill Mall with opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 15 with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The free stages performances start Wednesday, June 15 until Sunday, June 19, featuring over 150 local musicians. Wednesday night June 15 you can hear pianist Bill Charlap at the Riddell Centre at the University of Regina at 8:30 p.m. The Kevin Kasha Quintet, featuring Kaitlyn & Kieran Kasha, warms up at 7:00 p.m.

On Thursday, June 16 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. we feature five of Regina’s strongest jazz band programs, with two bands from Campbell Collegiate, Riffel High School, Jack MacKenzie School, and Winston Knoll High School all taking center stage on the City Plaza Square to highlight their programs. That same night you can catch Blue Moon Marquee at Bushwakker Brew Pub at 7:00 p.m.

On Friday, June 17 you can catch the free stages from 10:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Leading up to the headlining act The Marianne Trudel Trio at Le Bistro 8:30 p.m. will be Alexis Normand at 7:00 p.m.

Free stages continue on Saturday, June 20, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., leading up to the headlining act Rah Rah in the Ballroom of the Ramada Plaza Hotel at 8:30 p.m. Snake River Band will open at 7:00 p.m.

The Sunday morning Father’s Day Jazz Brunch from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the Ramada Plaza Ball Room will feature guest Pat Steele with the Regina Jazz Orchestra, directed by Brent Ghiglione. There’ll be no better entertainment in Regina this Sunday morning with this Father’s Day Jazz Brunch Concert for all those of you looking to celebrate Dad’s special occasion. You won’t be disappointed you attended this affordable event! Brunch & Concert: $35 Adults / $15 Ages 7-11 / Free for ages 6 and under.

Following your Father’s Day Jazz Brunch you can stay right where you are in the Ramada Ballroom to enjoy our Scotiabank and MCoS sponsored Multicultural Day in the Ramada Plaza Ballroom, 1:00-6:00 p.m. It’s free and includes a performance by Argentinian guitarist Gabriel Palatchi, as well as several other local groups featuring many of Regina and community’s finest multicultural artists. This is sure to be a fun and colourful celebration and exposition of some of the best diverse music and talent from throughout our community.

A young, hip, sound will greet you Sunday evening to close out this year’s event and propel everyone into the summer following JazzFest, when the Laila Biali Trio take the stage with their moving rhythm, roots, and jazzy hip sounds in the Ballroom of the Ramada Plaza, Sunday evening, June 19 at 8:30 p.m. The New Montagues will warm everyone up beginning at 7:00 p.m. You’ll be jumpin’ and singin’ as we close the 8th JazzFest Regina.

There’s plenty of jazz club activity in 13 venues. Pre-event activity kicks off at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday night, beginning JazzFest Regina 2016 Club Scene at the Capitol. Then Wednesday heads to Beer Bros., Chiller’s Brew Pub (Moose Jaw), and the Nest. 

Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. you can dig the hip sounds of Blue Moon Marquee at the Bushwakker Brew Pub (tickets are only $15).  You can also hear live jazz Thursday night at Beer Bros., Crave Kitchen & Wine Bar, Capitol, Jack Keaton’s Barbecue, Nest,  Shannon’s Irish Pub and Table Ten.

Friday, June 17 has live jazz taking in the clubs at Beer Bros., Bobby’s Place, Capitol, Chiller’s Brew Pub (Moose Jaw), Crave Kitchen & Wine Bar, Jack Keaton’s Barbecue, Nest, Owl, and 20Ten City Eatery.

Saturday, June 18 features live jazz at Beer Bros., Chiller’s Brew Pub (Moose Jaw), Crave Kitchen & Wine Bar, Jack Keaton’s Barbecue, Nest, and 20Ten City Eatery.

Regina Jazz Society President Peter Champagne notes, “This year’s program continues where last year’s left off, but, only more so by reflecting Canada’s multicultural reality in music. Jazz in Canada today is a reflection of the new Canadian identity and reality that’s diverse, energetic, optimistic, and one that encompasses all ages and demographics. Whether you’re a serious jazz afficionado or a first-time casual jazz tourist, you’ll find music to your liking at an affordable price from free or $15-$35 in friendly locales. There’s a great variety of music in at least 13 clubs over 5 days. So come out and enjoy yourself and share the company of other likeminded friends.”
