SXSW 2014 Official Saskatchewan Showcasing Artists

Andy Shauf
Over the past few years, Regina’s Andy Shauf has emerged as one of Canada’s most respected singer-songwriter voices, wooing audiences with his tender tenor and softly-strummed songs, and invoking the spirits of departed folk heroes such as Nick Drake, Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley. With a solid management and publicity team in place, Andy Shauf is preparing the followup to his self-produced 2012 album The Bearer of Bad News (which earned him Producer of the Year honours at 2013’s Western Canadian Music Awards). www.andyshauf.com

Slow Down, Molasses
Saskatoon’s Slow Down Molasses is a five-piece indie-rock collective described as “the Broken Social Scene of the prairies” by Toronto’s Exclaim! Magazine. Taking cues from the wide-open spaces of their home, they craft expansive, texture-heavy pop songs that break into storm squalls of drone, delay and feedback. For their new record Burnt Black Cars, out later this year, they have turned to producer and prairies ex-pat Jace Lasek of the Besnard Lakes, developing the dreamy vocal arrangements of their previous, self-released album Walk Into the Sea (number 12 on Uncut editor Allan Jones’ personal top 20 of the year, between Neil Young’s Americana and Sharon Van Etten’s Tramp) and sharpening the songwriting into concise blasts of synth-driven melodies and full-on rock choruses. www.slowdownmolasses.com
