Rosie and The Riveters, a local folk/gospel 1940‘s-esque group will sing, dance and charm their way from Luseland to Langenburg and Prince Albert to Bengough this April. Rosie & the Riveters is based in Saskatoon and includes members Farideh, Alexis Normand, Melissa Nygren and Kiera Dall’Osto.
With the charm of The Andrew Sisters, the wit of Chic Gamine and the rootsy harmonies of The Good Lovelies, the quartet performed at some of Saskatchewan’s top music festivals in the summer of 2012: the Ness Creek Music Festival, the Regina Folk Festival and Wood Mountain Folk Festival. They were also selected for official showcases at the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals in Oct 2012 and Folk Alliance International in Feb 2013.
“...Their take on gospel/roots is true to the original standards, while also inciting a rollicking fun sensibility. They have beautiful harmonies, perfect rhythm, and yet, whoops, hollers, and mile wide smiles in the right places create a sound that is wonderfully organic and real. The four women (of Rosie and the Riveters) may have taken the name of a strong feminist icon as their moniker, but their delivery is more like the siren call that tempted Greek sailors to steer their ships into the rocks. After hearing them sing --- show me the rocks so that I may dash myself upon them!”
Craig Silliphant - Planet S Magazine & Polaris Music Prize juror
Audiences will enjoy seductive live vocal arrangements, percussion, acoustic instrumentation, scintillating choreography, inviting humor and a whole lot of charm at a Rosie and the Riveters concert. The set list consists of traditional African American spirituals, toe-tapping bluegrass numbers, war-time tunes, contemporary folk songs, and original material. They cover songs such as After the Goldrush by Neil Young, Keys to the Kingdom by Abigail Washburn/Bela Fleck, and old standards like Wade in the Water and Down By the Riverside.
Rosie and the Riveters - LIVE was recorded at two shows in Saskatoon in the summer of 2012 and was recently released to the public. The album is available for purchase on bandcamp (http://rosietheriveters.bandcamp.com/) and at concerts, in addition to some cheeky merchandise: Rosie & the Riveters branded panties, aprons and handcrafted soap!
