This month, we’ll be putting the focus on melody writing. We’ll start by discussing the basics of melody, then move into more specifics, such as how to pair melody with lyrics, and tips for writing memorable melodies. We’ll talk about melodic motifs and break down some elements of hit songs to demonstrate melodic concepts found across musical styles. We'll also provide melody-writing exercises for you to try at home.
Following the discussion, we'll have a song share - bring a song you’re working on to share with the group, and other songwriters can provide you with feedback. (More details below.)
SONG SHARE
The song share is an opportunity for songwriters to share their works in progress and receive feedback from other songwriters in a supportive environment. It doesn’t have to be a fully formed song yet; you can bring part of a song that you’re struggling to complete and ask questions of the group. Whatever stage the song is in, we’re ready to hear it and will be there to support you.
Please note that this month’s song share will be run on a first come, first serve basis, with a focus on taking the time for feedback and discussion following each song. Given that the timing of discussions and feedback may vary, we anticipate having only 4-7 spots available. If you know in advance that you plan on sharing, please let us know when you register.
We encourage all song share participants to share their lyrics with us so we can display them during the event. This will help fellow songwriters in the room and on Zoom follow along and provide valuable feedback. If you'll be attending in person, please upload your lyrics during registration. If you'll be joining via Zoom, kindly email your lyrics to songwriters@saskmusic.org.
WHAT TO BRING
Bring your pen/paper, writing devices, and your guitar or main instrument if you wish to participate in the song share portion. We will have a vocal mic, keyboard, and a small PA system available for use if needed.
REGINA SONGWRITERS GROUP
The Regina Songwriters Group exists to develop the craft of songwriting and provide a peer network of songwriters, lyricists, composers and beatmakers. Meetings are generally held once a month with additional songwriting exercises, resources and information shared on socials.
