Presented as part of our 2018 Canadian Songwriter Challenge (in partnership with Bell Media and the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations), we are opening up this portion of the weekend to the public at no charge! 

Tim Hardy worked with SOCAN (performing right organization The Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada) in a variety of positions within their Licensing & Membership Departments in both its head office in Toronto and its Atlantic Canadian office in Halifax NS for over 22 years. Tim currently operates an independent rights management/music consulting company (Aspenway Music) based in Halifax and is the co-owner of Sound of Pop, an independent music publishing and one-stop master/sync representation company based in Nova Scotia. He will lead a discussion on Copyright and Royalties, while covering the following:

  • Where do the royalties come from & how to ensure you’re receiving them.

CMRRA / SODRAC

  • The difference between the two organizations.

  • The difference between the two organizations.

  • How to join & register your works.
  • The difference between the three organizations.
  • Where do the royalties come from & how to ensure you’re receiving them.

Additional topics include the basics of copyright, what a music publisher does, Synchronization/Master Use royalties for Film, TV & Ad placements and how to properly utilize Spotify for Artists, etc.
