Annie-Claude Deschênes embraces multidisciplinarity in her quest to merge music and performance art, challenging stage conventions. A prominent figure in Montreal’s independent music scene for over twenty years, she gained recognition as the frontwoman of the cult bands Duchess Says and PyPy. Annie’s solo project marks a shift from aggression to dystopian disco vibes. Inspired by minimal pop and electronic pioneers, her debut album, LES MANIÈRES DE TABLE, is both danceable and disquieting, reexamining social codes of politeness.
New York/Berlin based musician and multimedia artist JJ Weihl makes music under the moniker Discovery Zone. Growing up in Manhattan, JJ listened to a lot of 90s pop and oldies as a kid before discovering jazz and alternative rock as a teen. Spending most of her free time reading, writing stories and engaging with modern dance and theater — she started writing songs on the guitar in high school. Dance and choreography fueled her interest in music, leading her to touchstones like Art of Noise and Aphex Twin whose music often accompanied dance performances.
Mart Avi is known for making spiky and mysterious music for the feet and heart, for living and loving. He grew up in a pint-sized Estonian village named Vara (“Treasure” in English), toying around with rusty remnants from its industrious past that informed his aesthetics in creating another space, using topographies close at hand. Mapping uncharted territories between modern pop and timeless grandeur, Avi, as a sound master and singer-songwriter, is simultaneously suave and slippery. His shimmering melodies, crackling rhythms and off-kilter mindgames tend to seduce the unawares. A consummate performer, he presents a fascinating paradox of soulful tenderness pulsing beneath commanding arm thrusts and menacing high kicks.
