UPDATE AUGUST 9, 2025 - John Kushneryk of Prince Albert has confirmed that he will also be part of the Canwood Show and Dance for the second consecutive year!
Before he became a household name in the fiddling world, John Kushneryk was already turning heads at the Prince Albert Winter Festival. He picked up the fiddle at just seven years old, and by the late 1960s, he was competing — and winning — at the festival.
His talent carried him far. From 1973 to 1976, he reigned as the Western Canadian Fiddling Champion for four years in a row. After that fourth victory, the organizers presented him with the trophy to keep — a permanent reminder of his remarkable run. He was also the first Saskatchewan fiddler to judge the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship in 1992 with Quebec fiddler Yvon Cuillerier and Don Messer Jubilee legend Cec McEachern of P.E.I.. Not long after, he traded the competitor’s spotlight for a judge’s seat, lending his expertise to inspire and guide the next generation of fiddlers.
