Description

Belle Plaine is a singer, a songwriter and an inventive independent musician raised on the Canadian prairies near the hamlet of Fosston, Saskatchewan – population: 45. The ingenuity, lonesome yearning and collaborative work ethic of country life infiltrates her songwriting, her sound and her methods. Belle’s album Malice, Mercy, Grief & Wrath (October 19, 2018) highlights her tremendous voice and prodigious songwriting abilities, and showcases her varied musical influences from Link Wray and the Everly Brothers, to Cole Porter and Neko Case. The record is produced by Jason Plumb [Colter Wall, The Dead South].

As an avid collaborator she has performed her music with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, was a guest vocalist on Colter Wall’s breakthrough debut album, Imaginary Appalachia, and saw her co-writing and harmony-singing chops featured on Blake Berglund’s 2017 release, Realms.

“Some new songs, some old songs, some songs I love by other people.” Belle’s new 11-song album is a live, full-band recording that she conceived to capture the blend of genres and personalities that she presents out on tour; a heartfelt blend of country, folk, and jazz, with honesty. “Belle’s voice is old timey and jazzy. It has twang, crystal bells and swing. You listen to this voice, and all of a sudden your cheatin’ heart has a very dry martini in hand, and you’re hearing something both timeless and brand new.” – Kelley Jo Burke, CBC. Recorded at: The Artesian by Chris Haynes; mixed by Orion Paradis, Melanie Hankewich, Jeremy Sauer and Elizabeth Curry at Soul Sound Studio, Regina. More info: www.belleplainemusic.com

Produced by Jason Plumb [Colter Wall] at Studio One in Regina SK, Belle’s new record evokes an unmistakable classic country influence. “The album’s country side came partly from my upbringing, but also from working closely with my partner, Blake Berglund, and performing with his band-mates, who became trusted collaborators,” says Belle. “I’m not one that can pre-determine a final product and then create it. I’m more like, ‘What are we making today?’” Just as Belle refuses to live her life according to a stoic plan, moving unfettered from moment to moment, her recording method also takes on this spontaneous nature.
