Canadian Independent Music Association Responds to Federal Budget 2025

The Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) is welcoming the federal government’s recognition of the vital role that Canadian artists and music entrepreneurs play in the national economy through its renewed investment in the Canada Music Fund (CMF), announced in Budget 2025.

“We’re encouraged to see the government acknowledge the importance of the Canada Music Fund,” said Andrew Cash, President and CEO of CIMA. “Canadian music companies and the artists they work with represent a dynamic economic engine powering the growth of Canada’s cultural economy. This budget announcement is an encouraging step forward.”

While CIMA appreciates the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting Canada’s music ecosystem—particularly the allocation of $48 million over three years, beginning in 2026–27—this investment must be the first step in ensuring the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of Canada’s independent music sector.

CIMA and its partners across the country have called for an increase to the Canada Music Fund to $60 million annually to secure the future of Canadian-owned music companies, entrepreneurs, and artists in a rapidly changing global industry.

For over four decades, the Canada Music Fund—delivered through FACTOR and Musicaction—has been a cornerstone of Canada’s music economy, driving innovation, export growth, and cultural exchange. The Fund supports thousands of small and medium-sized music businesses that invest in intellectual property, create jobs and build audiences for Canadian music both here at home and around the world.

Canada’s arts and culture sector is vital to the Canadian economy. According to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, over the past three years, GDP from the sector has grown by nearly 8%, outpacing Canada’s overall economic growth of 4%.

The arts, entertainment, and recreation industries support more jobs per million dollars of output than trade, construction, agriculture, manufacturing, and oil and gas combined. In 2024, Canada’s arts and culture sector directly contributed $65 billion to the economy—about 2% of nominal GDP—and supported 1.1 million jobs nationwide when accounting for total economic impacts. Research also shows that higher public investment in the arts correlates with stronger community well-being and a greater sense of meaning and purpose among Canadians.

“A stable Canada Music Fund is essential to building a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable music industry that reflects and amplifies Canada’s diverse voices,” says Cash.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the federal government to build permanent, long-term investment solutions that ensure Canada continues to be a leader in music innovation, talent development, and cultural export on the global stage.”

SaskMusic would also like to thank everyone who participated in the letter campaign for supporting this effort. We're looking forward to working with partners across Canada in the coming years to ensure Canadian Music is supported into 2026 and beyond.

SaskMusic and three artists at Mundial and M for Montréal 2025

SaskMusic is returning to Montréal this month, as the renowned music industry events Mundial and M for Montréal return and celebrate their 15th and 20th years respectively.

This year, three Saskatchewan artists will be showcasing. Lancelot Knight will perform an official showcase at Mundial, and Jake Vaadeland and The Pxrtals will perform official showcases at M for Montréal.

Congratulations to the performing artists!

“These events are essential in presenting Saskatchewan’s talented creative entrepreneurs to the world stage,” Lorena Kelly, SaskMusic’s Executive Director says.

“In an era of global uncertainty, showcasing allows creative entrepreneurs the opportunity to present their music to the Canadian and global marketplace. Often, these events offer talented Canadian and Saskatchewan creatives a competitive advantage in their careers—and we’re lucky to be supporting these talented musicians in Montreal this year,” Kelly added.

SaskMusic will also be on the ground participating in networking, business-to-business meetings, and educational events while supporting our artists and representing the Saskatchewan music industry at these export missions.

This year, we’re pleased that the must-attend ‘All Together Now’ dinner is back for 2025, providing an opportunity to connect and network with professionals from the industry from Canada and abroad.

This event is presented by SaskMusic, in partnership with provincial music industry associations and music industry non-profits, BreakOut West, Manitoba Music, and Music BC.

Showcase Times:

  • Lancelot Knight: Thursday, Nov. 20 at 3:20 p.m. at Robin des Bois.
  • Jake Vaadeland: Thursday, Nov. 20 from 2 p.m. – 2:25 pm at Quai des Brumes and 10 p.m. – 11:45 at Casa Del Popolo.
  • The Pxrtals: Thursday, Nov. 20 from 4:30 p.m. - 4:55 p.m. at Esco.

SaskMusic’s export missions are made possible, in part, through support from Creative Saskatchewan (Mundial and M for Montreal), the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR), the Government of Canada, and Canada’s private radio broadcasters (M for Montreal).

For more information about SaskMusic's export program, visit our website here.

SaskMusic and partners present Come Together in Toronto, Nov. 25-26, 2025

Artists and industry professionals from across Canada are converging in Toronto later this month for the fifth annual celebration of live music at the Come Together showcases and industry meetings.

Ten Provincial Music Associations: Alberta Music, Music BC, SaskMusic, Manitoba Music, Music/Musique NB, Music NL, Music Nova Scotia, Music Yukon, Music Ontario, and SODEC Quebec, have joined forces to spotlight Canada’s powerhouse independent live music scene.

The genre-spanning, invite-only showcases for industry professionals will run November 25 at The Horseshoe Tavern, and November 26 at The Drake Underground, featuring performances from fourteen acclaimed artists.

This year, Saskatchewan artists Big Tones and Greenwing have been selected for official showcases!

The Horseshoe Tavern Showcase Times:

The Drake Underground Showcase Times:
November 26, 2025: 5-10 PM

Beyond the showcases, Come Together is a critical opportunity for the artists to build business relationships with key music industry professionals from Toronto and surrounding areas, including labels, agents, managers, publishers, music supervisors, publicists, and more.

Showcasing acts work directly with their provincial music association to identify business contacts for industry meetings. Come Together is a push towards industry connections, team building, and business strategies for both artists and music companies.

This project is made possible by the generous support from FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s private radio broadcasters; The Province of Alberta, Creative BC and The Province of British Columbia, The Manitoba Government, Manitoba Film & Music, Creative Saskatchewan, The Government of Quebec, Ontario Creates, The Provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland & Labrador, and the Yukon Territory

How were the artists selected?

A call for submissions was distributed by event partners in June 2025. All artists programmed for this opportunity were selected by a national industry jury.

For more information about SaskMusic's export program, visit our website here.
