Singing is one of the most natural and joyful ways to express ourselves. Whether you’ve always wanted to sing but didn’t know where to start, or you’re looking to build confidence in a supportive group setting, this class is designed to help you take that first step.

Join us as we explore the foundations of singing in a welcoming, beginner-friendly environment. Together we’ll learn songs, experiment with harmony, and begin building the skills needed to sing with greater ease and confidence. This class is specifically designed for beginners and anyone curious about discovering their voice in a positive, encouraging space. We will touch on a variety of important vocal topics to give you awareness and practical tools, without diving deeply into advanced technique.

Class leader Alyssa Woolhether:
Alyssa Woolhether
has established a dynamic and multifaceted career as a voice teacher, adjudicator, workshop facilitator, choir director, and performer. She maintains a thriving private voice studio at the University of Regina’s Conservatory of Performing Arts and serves as Artistic Director of Sisters in Song Women’s Choir of Regina.

Alyssa holds a Master of Music in Performance and Literature from Western University and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Regina. She is certified in Levels I, II, and III of Somatic Voicework™ – The LoVetri Method, and her teaching is grounded in functional voice training and vocal empowerment across musical styles.

In addition to her classical background, Alyssa is the bandleader and songwriter for Lyssa & the Try-Tones, the Regina-based soul/pop band. For more information visit  www.alyssawoolhether.com

What you’ll explore in this class:

  • A simple, beginner-friendly introduction to how the voice works - learning how your breathing, posture, and vocal coordination come together to create a balanced, free, and easy sound
  • Exercises to help you produce a clear, confident tone without strain
  • Gently exploring the different parts (or “registers”) of your voice so you can move through your range more smoothly
  • Improving clarity of sound through easy articulation and coordination
  • Discovering how resonance shapes and colours your voice
  • An introduction to stylistic singing techniques, including mix voice and belting
  • Learning how to sing harmonies with others, plus an approachable introduction to riffs and runs
  • Exploring different musical styles and how your technique can adjust between genres
  • Practical vocal warm-ups and healthy habits to support long-term vocal health
  • Learning and performing songs together in a fun, collaborative group setting

Materials: Please bring a water bottle, a notebook and a pencil. Most importantly, bring an open mind and a spirit of curiosity - a willingness to try, experiment, make some noise, and discover what your voice can do. All other materials will be provided.

The Next Edition of the Saskatchewan Music Awards: An Update

Music Monday Returns May 4 with Nationwide "Hold On" Sing-Along

Students and communities across Canada come together May 4 in a coast to coast sing-along, as Triumph kicks off its 50th anniversary tour.

"Hold On" - the uplifting, inspirational song by classic Canadian hard rock power trio, Triumph has been chosen as the 2026 Music Monday anthem. We are thrilled to announce this collaboration with the band, including a new arrangement by Rik Emmett created for Music Monday.

Created to celebrate the power of music and demonstrate how that power is rooted in school music programs, Music Monday will be observed in many ways across the country – in school classrooms, special school assemblies, group concerts of area schools, concerts of community bands, and choirs with special events.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of children, youth, teachers, parents, music-makers, and community members across Canada join #TogetherInHarmony for Music Monday.

Music has the magic power to connect us, and at 10:30 am SK/12:30 pm ET, we will gather to sing (and perform) our Music Monday song, "Hold On".
