SaskMusic reaffirms support for community funding ahead of City of Regina Budget deliberations

As the City of Saskatoon faces significant budgetary pressures in the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years, Administration has put forward a list of reductions for council to explore during budget deliberations.

Of those more than 100 budget scenarios—all of which are aimed at lowering property tax rates in 2026 and 2027 —some include cutting arts and cultural supports. SaskMusic would like to reaffirm the importance of community-rooted funding for essential arts and cultural services.

“Community-based arts and cultural funding in Saskatoon serves as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural economy. While we recognize that Council is only just beginning budget deliberations, cuts to the arts would be devastate Saskatoon’s arts and cultural workers, at a time when Canadian creative entrepreneurs need more support, not less," says SaskMusic Executive Director, Lorena Kelly.

As city budget deliberations continue, we’re asking Saskatoon residents to utilize the Saskatchewan Art Alliance’s (SAA) letter-writing tool to contact the Mayor and your City Councillor and reaffirm your support for Saskatoon’s arts and cultural sector.

SaskMusic reaffirms support for community funding ahead of City of Regina Budget deliberations

As the City of Regina transitions to a new, transparent budget process, SaskMusic would like to reaffirm the importance of community-rooted funding for essential arts and cultural services.

“We know that community-based arts and cultural funding help make Regina the safe, artistic, and supportive community we love. And while we’re encouraged by comments made by Mayor Chad Bachynski in a recent online statement that this is not the final budget, we’re cognizant that cuts to the arts would be devastating to Regina,” says SaskMusic Executive Director, Lorena Kelly.

Currently several proposed scenarios are heading to Council in the coming weeks for debate. Of those scenarios, suggestions include:

  • Eliminating the Community Investments Grant Program. This is the main municipal funder for arts, culture, festivals, and community programs. Less funding means Regina has less of all of this – important parts of our economy, our society, our belonging and well-being.
  • Possible closure or off-loading of the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre. Many organizations, and programs would lose this key community arts hub.
  • Reductions that weaken community associations, cultural programs, and neighbourhood services across the city.

As city budget deliberations begin, we’re asking Regina residents to utilize the Saskatchewan Art Alliance’s (SAA) letter-writing tool to contact the Mayor and your City Councillor and reaffirm your support for Regina’s arts and cultural sector.

Creative Sask. funding available for filmmakers creating music videos

The Filmmaker’s Grant program supports emerging Saskatchewan filmmakers with mentorship and production funds to produce content under 10 minutes intended to build the filmmakers’ professional portfolio.

  • For musicians, the program’s objective is to promote an upcoming single through the production of a music video.
  • For filmmakers (director or producer, or an individual acting as both), the program’s objective is to create capacity development opportunities, as selected applicants will gain experience managing production and working with clients.
  • Both parties (musicians and filmmakers) will have a completed music video to add to their professional portfolio. However, the musicians will maintain ownership of the finished project.
  • A letter of support for the project from the musician must be included in the application. Musicians must be a signatory on the funding agreement should a grant be awarded.

Filmmakers will be paired with a mentor throughout the production process who will advise and work with the teams to finalize video treatment (shot list or storyboard etc.), production budget, production schedule, production agreements, rough cut, and fine cut.

For more information, or to read the full guidelines, visit Creative Saskatchewan's website here.
