INDIGENOUS SONGWRITERS RETREAT - SUBMISSIONS CLOSING TODAY!

Taking place in Saskatoon and Wanuskewin, August 18-20, 2023
Deadline to submit July 27/2023

Presented by SaskMusic, funded in part by Creative Saskatchewan and FACTOR Canada
With gratitude to SaskMusic's Indigenous Advisory

Through this submission process, 10 Indigenous songwriters/artists will be selected to participate in an all-expenses-paid creative retreat. If there are more than 10 eligible applicants, a jury will select the 10. All genders and musical genres are invited to apply.

What to expect:

Throughout the weekend, two established national Indigenous mentors / music professionals will provide songwriting guidance and info on various music industry topics. A knowledge keeper is being consulted in the planning of this weekend and will be in attendance for portions of the event. Additional local music industry reps will come to provide information on additional topics - such as live performance, marketing, and so on.

Each songwriter will have one-on-one time with the mentors. A sacred site and gathering place, Wanuskewin offers a beautiful location and amazing Indigenous-focused cuisine.

SaskMusic will cover all costs of the participants, including gas allowances for those travelling to get to Saskatoon, accommodations, and meals.

The goal of this weekend is to have participants come away with stronger songwriting skills, co-writing experience, some music industry tips, a network of peers to potentially collaborate with in the future, and overall inspiration to apply to your musical career and artistic work.

Schedule:

A detailed schedule will be provided to all selected participants.

Friday August 18, evening: arrival in Saskatoon between 3-7pm,
7-10pm meet and greet, opening remarks/workshop

Saturday August 19, morning: to Wanuskewin 930am-5pm, for a day of writing and learning (transportation to and from Saskatoon can be arranged)
evening: return to Saskatoon for supper, evening workshop and sharing of songs at hotel
6-10pm

Sunday August 20, morning: to Wanuskewin 9am-4pm for writing and learning
4pm: departures. (A Sunday night hotel will be provided to those travelling more than 4 hours to return home.)

Criteria to apply:

  • You have been developing your skills as a songwriter and are interested in learning new writing skills as well as working on co-writing
  • You are interested in expanding your knowledge on the music industry side of things - You are age 19+
  • You are committed to attending the whole schedule for the weekend
  • You do not have to be a performing artist, but you do need to be interested in developing the songwriting/storyteller aspect of your music.

Please note this event will be fully drug and alcohol-free and all participants and mentors will be expected to honour this.

Participation costs for 10 selected participants will be covered. A deposit of $100 will be required to hold your spot if you are selected. This deposit will be refunded to you following your attendance at the event. It is being requested to ensure that all participants are committed to attending, and so that we are able to plan our mentors' time appropriately.

The day conference consists of 200+ international promoters, artists and festival owners.

As a growing genre, and one very popular in Canada, Americana (a combination of roots, blues, folk and alt country music) is an important market to expand on in the UK for the Canadian Music industry. AmericanaFest UK is keen to build the Canadian presence in the UK with a showcase and business initiative. This presents a lucrative opportunity for the vast number of Canadian music companies who represent this genre of music in Canada.
