Sask. artists Ellen Froese and Jeffery Straker will be participating in Canada House at AmericanaFest 2024. SaskMusic is partnering with colleagues CIMA, Alberta Music, Manitoba Music, Music Nova Scotia and MusicOntario to present a showcasing & business opportunity for Canadian companies and their artists at the event. The AMERICANAFEST conference and festival gathers thousands of artists, fans, and industry professionals from September 17-21 for five days of celebration through seminars, panels, networking opportunities, showcases and more.

Canadian companies representing the showcasing artists will also participate in a business-to-business session in partnership with Sounds Australia, British Underground and AMERICANAFEST.

While SaskMusic staff are not attending this year’s event, SaskMusic is sponsoring the presentation costs of the Sask artists in Canada House and has been working to maximize their results in advance of the event.

How were the Canada House artists chosen?

A call for submissions for Canada House spots was run by CIMA, and juried by AmericanaFest, through which process the two Sask artists were selected.

Note: AmericanaFest also runs a separate official showcase submission process each year to curate their official showcase artists.

This week, SaskMusic is part of Canada House - a partnership of Canadian music industry associations - where we're presenting Grimelda and Katie Tupper as part of an export mission that includes 24 Canadian artists in all. Our Export Manager Kaelen is on the ground participating in additional business events, including a 'Meet the Canadians' session with German industry in Hamburg.

Regina Songwriters promo

Regina Songwriters Group x SaskMusic September Meeting

Monthly MeetUps return for the fall! The Regina Songwriters Group exists to develop the craft of songwriting and provide a peer network of songwriters, lyricists, composers and beatmakers. Meetings are generally held once a month with additional songwriting exercises, resources and information shared on socials.

The next MeetUp will be this Sunday, September 22, 2-4pm at The Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre (2420 Elphinstone St, Regina). No registration required, free to attend and songwriters of all skill levels welcome! This month's meeting will be a song share. Show off what you have been working on over the summer. Bring your instrument, your lyric sheet, and share with your fellow songwriters in this casual environment! (A keyboard will be on hand.)

Future meetups with learning topics will be held Sunday, October 27 and Sunday, November 24, 2-4pm.

Funding for your Music Activities

A list of grants offered for the music industry is available on our website under Funding Options.

For FACTOR and Creative Saskatchewan grants, we encourage you to book a consult time with one of our staff or mentors to get tips and feedback on your applications before you submit - especially if you are a first-time applicant to a program. All grant streams are increasingly competitive, and it's important to understand the requirements of each funder to prepare your best application. Don't despair, we're here to help!

Imminent deadlines:

Canadian Starmaker Fund: 5PM EST, September 26. For export-ready artists. Supports a variety of marketing and promotional initiatives related to eligible Canadian recordings, including radio advertising. For eligibility see www.starmaker.ca. It is strongly suggested you begin preparing your application far in advance of the deadline.

SK Arts: Independent Artists Grant Program: October 1. Supports Saskatchewan artists to pursue their creative work and careers by funding creative, professional development, or research projects, and the production and/or presentation of artistic works. Learn more.

SK Arts: Indigenous/Metis Art & Artists Program: October 15. Open to Indigenous artists and/or Traditional Knowledge Keepers/Elders working in any art form who are Saskatchewan residents; small groups or collectives of Saskatchewan Indigenous artists working in any art form. Learn more.

New date: Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prizes

Members of the arts, and social sciences and humanities communities, who contribute in a significant way to Canada’s cultural and intellectual heritage are now eligible to be nominated for the 2024 Molson Prizes.

The Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prizes are awarded annually to two individuals who have distinguished themselves by their outstanding achievements in the arts and in the social sciences and humanities.

These prizes are administered by the Canada Council in collaboration with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The winners are chosen by a peer assessment committee, which is appointed jointly by the Canada Council and SSHRC.

Value: $50,000
How to nominate: Candidates are nominated by either an individual or an organization. Nominations are submitted to the Canada Council for the Arts by email.
