Regina Songwriters January 25

“Writing to a Live Groove” Songwriting Workshop

Thursday, Jan 25/2024, 7-9:30 pm
Neil Balkwill Centre, 2420 Elphinstone St, Regina

The Regina Songwriters Group and SaskMusic welcome songwriters of all skill levels and genres to join for a fun, casual, and free workshop where we'll be writing to a live beat. This month’s workshop features long-time Saskatchewan MC Brad Bellegarde (InfoRed) to talk about and demonstrate freestyling and writing for hip-hop - sure to provide some inspiration no matter what style you typically write in! We'll also be joined by veteran musicians Cyprian Henry (Drums) & Erik Mehlsen (Guitar/Bass) to provide a number of short live grooves and vibes for attendees to try writing to. Later in the evening songwriters will be invited to share writings created at the session or other material they have been working on for feedback. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.

Whether you're just getting started or a veteran songwriter, join us and meet up with other local songwriters!

Things you may want to bring: Something to write lyrics on, water bottle, guitar (optional). A keyboard will be available for the sharing portion.

Numbers behind the music workshop

  • Regina Workshop: Thursday, Feb 1/2024, 7-9pm.

Whatever your role now or planning for the future, and whether you are DIY or have a team, understanding the "numbers" behind your creations will help your decision-making and buy back time to focus on your art.

Join mentor Martina of BackBeat Bookkeeping for an interactive and fun (yes we said fun!) session to better understand your artistic financial questions, including:

  • What are the Canada Revenue Agency's tracking and reporting requirements?
  • What roles do bookkeepers, accountants, and lawyers play?
  • What is my business "entity" for tax purposes?
  • What are accounting terms such as assets or budgets, and why do they help make better decisions?
  • Are audits the "scariest" thing in the world?

Evolution Summit

Evolution Youth Music Summit

Attend FREE in Regina, Friday February 23 or Saturday, February 24/24
Registration is open until February 10 or until we reach capacity

Are you interested in music – maybe a musician, singer, or songwriter - and curious to learn more about performing and the music business? SaskMusic is offering an exciting opportunity for youth (age 14 to 25) to learn more about performing and professional music options.

Our Evolution Youth Music Summit will be a unique opportunity for you to receive information and guidance to get started in the right direction, and meet others who are passionate about music. We’re gathering working artists and industry professionals to mentor you through topics such as musicianship (with separate sessions for vocal, bass, guitar, etc), promotions, professionalism, stage skills, and other topics geared to those getting started in the music scene.

This one-day summit will be offered on two dates. You can attend on Friday, February 23 or Saturday, February 24. Thanks to the support of our sponsors The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings (FACTOR) and Creative Sask, we are able to offer free registration! Be a Music Champion - FACTOR

Spread the word about the Canada Music Fund (CMF)

We need your help to raise the voice of the music community and get the federal government’s attention. You can do that in seconds by using this action page to email Liberal MPs and Canada’s Ministers of Heritage and Finance. Call on them to be Music Champions and remind them to keep their promise to increase the budget of the Canada Music Fund. Additionally, PLEASE tell your networks about the #canadamusicfund and use these images to share on social media!

Here’s why: The Liberal government, which has been a strong supporter of Canada’s music sector throughout the pandemic, promised in the last federal election to increase the annual contribution to the Canada Music Fund to $50 million by 2024-2025.

That’s huge because the Canada Music Fund (CMF) is a key part of what funds FACTOR’s ground-breaking investments in Canadian artists and music companies - including songwriters and music publishers. Last year alone FACTOR invested $21 million in the music sector. 6,500 artists have had support through FACTOR in the last five years.

But FACTOR’s budget can’t keep up with the growing demands for its programming. The other part of FACTOR’s annual budget comes from contributions from private radio broadcasters and those contributions are falling fast. For example, in 2020, FACTOR received $16 million in radio contributions. In 2024-25 those contributions could be as low as $2 million. This is why the CMF increase is so crucial. But look, that $50 million would only ensure that existing programming continues and is insufficient to create new programming for the live sector. That’s why most music associations across the country have called for an increase to $60 million.

So if the government does not make good even on their $50 million promise to our sector, FACTOR’s budget could be cut in half over the next couple of years. If that happens companies will close, jobs will be lost, and artists won’t get the investments they need to record or tour which will harm an already precarious local live music scene.

We don’t want that. So, let’s remind them to keep their promise.

Let's do this! Visit the action page
