SaskMusic Opens 2021 Saskatchewan Music Award Nominations

SaskMusic is pleased to announce the opening of the nomination submission period for the 2021 Saskatchewan Music Awards. The fourth annual awards will honour excellence in the Saskatchewan music industry and celebrate the achievements of our music industry members over the past year. An awards event announcing the winners will be streamed online on January 20, 2022, in conjunction with the Very Prairie: Saskatchewan Music Summit.

SaskMusic notes, "We invite artists and industry members from all across the province to make submissions. There has been so much exciting music coming from Saskatchewan this year, with creativity continuing despite the challenges of the pandemic. We hope to see representation from a wide range of musical styles, cultural backgrounds, and artistic experiences of those working in our music scene. We look forward to a wonderful celebration honouring the hard work of our talented artists and industry members this past year."

Export Program

Developing Your UK Market: Apply Now for Mentorship!

We are working with the UK-based Enki Music to provide direct information about the UK music market to SaskMusic members.

While touring internationally is difficult at the current time, progress can still be made in learning about options to release, market, tour and develop your team overseas. Topics of discussion may include things such as industry trends, how to market yourself as a foreign artist overseas, tour routing and festival markets, logistics, information on the publishing network, and more.

This program will be of interest to artists, bands, songwriters, and others. Spots will be provided in this intake to a range of artists, from emerging to export-ready artists.

Showcase Filming

SaskMusic Showcase Filming, Intake 2
Deadline 5pm Friday, October 22, 2021

We are seeking submissions from Saskatchewan-resident artists who are interested in having a live performance professionally filmed for the purposes of marketing their music and/or for export development opportunities. These performances will be filmed without an audience present, and following government-recommended pandemic protocols. Artists will be filmed in either Regina or Saskatoon with a professional sound and video crew on a date to be discussed with artists, beginning in November 2021 and running into 2022.

The footage will be used by SaskMusic for promoting the selected artists, and the Saskatchewan music industry as a whole, in domestic and international markets. The footage will be later available to the artists for their own use. Our first intake of this program saw artist footage utilized at virtual showcase events including M for Montreal, Folk Alliance International (Folk Unlocked), New Colossus Festival (Upstairs Neighbours), Liverpool Sound City Digital, and Canadian Music Week, as well as the Saskatchewan Music Awards.

Closing the Gap

National Survey: Closing the Gap

“Closing the Gap: Impact and Representation of Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour (IBPOC) Live Music Workers in Canada” is a national research project led by the Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA) and its partners.

The study is designed to provide a more detailed picture of the opportunities for, and barriers to, addressing racism and discrimination in the live music sector. The study’s findings and recommendations will inform the development of an industry-wide action plan to implement more inclusive practices nationwide.

Anyone and everyone working in the live music community across Canada is encouraged to participate. Those completing the survey will have a chance to win a random draw for a $200 gift card every week the survey is open. A final report outlining the study’s findings and recommendations will be made publicly available at the conclusion of the research later this year at: www.canadianlivemusic.ca.
