New SaskMusic Policy on AI-Generated Content

We have released an official policy around AI-generated content use for SaskMusic and its members.

"SaskMusic will not knowingly promote the use of AI-generated songs or AI-generated artwork for Features, or any other marketing.

We realize that the ‘acceptable amount’ of AI usage is extremely hard to measure; however, we have heard unequivocally from our members that the use of AI-generated music and artwork harms creative individuals and our industry as a whole. Identification of AI-generated artwork is subject to voluntary disclosure from those submitting, and we reserve the right to decline promotion of an element that we suspect to be AI-generated.

We discourage our music industry members from using AI as anything other than a tool or helper.

SaskMusic will not knowingly use AI-generated artwork, photography, or music, and will direct any third-party suppliers we hire to not use AI-generated assets. We value the skill and contributions of human creators and occasionally hire third-party creatives outside of our own staff (eg photographers, graphic designers, mixers, voiceover actors) and appropriately license human-created graphic art and music."

SaskMusic x Regina Songwriters: Personifying Nature with Émi Lebel

Sunday, April 19, 7:00-9:00 pm SK Time
In-person at The Club (The Exchange - 2431 8th Avenue, Regina) and Online
Register to attend In Person HERE
Register to attend via Zoom HERE

Free to attend, and songwriters of all skill levels and styles welcome!

This month, we’ll be joined by guest speaker Émi Lebel, who will talk about her experiences as a bilingual writer, collaborating with other artists and how she finds inspiration in nature.

Workshop description:
In 2019, I went on a wildflower walk with the Meewasin Valley Authority and everytime the tour guide mentioned anything about a plant or animal or phenomenon, I was able to relate to it. The plant that started it all was Blue Gramma, a very resilient type of prairie grass shaped like eyelashes. I immediately started thinking about a grandma (cause I also misheard the tour guide gramma ≠ grandma). I imagined her having lived a very hard life and compared it to our resilience towards the extreme prairie weather and nature's resilience towards global warming. In 2020, I started working with Marie-Clo from Ontario on a bilingual project, Beau Nectar, this inspiration deeply inspired my bandmate and the rest is history. As a bilingual duo project, we not only collaborate, often remotely, but we also write in both French and English. I will be sharing my experiences as a bilingual writer, I will share tips on collaborating with other artists and hopefully inspire a whole new method of research-based art. - Émi Lebel

Following the discussion, we'll have a song share - bring a song you’re working on, or test drive a fresh song that you’d like to get feedback on (maybe you’re struggling with a chorus, a bridge, etc.). You can share this song with the group, and other songwriters can provide feedback. (More details here)

U of R Interdisciplinary Hub to Break Down Music Industry Barriers

A new University of Regina hub will expand sound research and boost diversity in music and gaming.

From SaskToday: “A new interdisciplinary hub for sound research and creation will help break down barriers in the music and video game industry.

Led by Dr. Charity Marsh, head of the creative technologies and design department, the University of Regina will construct the GENerate Collaboratory.

“The GENerate Collaboratory will be a place of experimentation, curiosity, play and a place where mistakes are valued,” said Marsh.

Students will have access to equipment, including recording studios, microphones, immersive labs and projectors for research, innovation and expanding possibilities.

One key objective of the hub is to amplify the voices of those who continue to be marginalized and underrepresented.”

Folk Alliance International: Virtual Affinity Groups
April 6-22, 2026

Navigating through the music industry can be overwhelming – especially when you're the only person in the room like you! FAI Affinity Groups are unique networking and community-building sessions that provide space for underrepresented voices in our industry. Affinity Groups create intentional, exclusive space to connect with others who share your experiences. Connect with folks with shared backgrounds, cultures, and experiences!

There are introductions, then, no agenda. You might have heart-to-heart talks about relevant issues, ask questions and share wisdom among trusted peers, or meet new life-long friends. We encourage you to let folks in the group know what you're working on or how you might need support!

Please note: Each Affinity Group is intended to be a space exclusively for those who self-identify as part of the group in question. If you do not identify as part of a group, we kindly ask that you do not join that group's session.
