SaskMusic reaffirms support for community funding ahead of City of Regina Budget deliberations

As the City of Regina transitions to a new, transparent budget process, SaskMusic would like to reaffirm the importance of community-rooted funding for essential arts and cultural services.

“We know that community-based arts and cultural funding help make Regina the safe, artistic, and supportive community we love. And while we’re encouraged by comments made by Mayor Chad Bachynski in a recent online statement that this is not the final budget, we’re cognizant that cuts to the arts would be devastating to Regina,” says SaskMusic Executive Director, Lorena Kelly.

Currently several proposed scenarios are heading to Council in the coming weeks for debate. Of those scenarios, suggestions include:

  • Eliminating the Community Investments Grant Program. This is the main municipal funder for arts, culture, festivals, and community programs. Less funding means Regina has less of all of this – important parts of our economy, our society, our belonging and well-being.
  • Possible closure or off-loading of the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre. Many organizations, and programs would lose this key community arts hub.
  • Reductions that weaken community associations, cultural programs, and neighbourhood services across the city.

As city budget deliberations begin, we’re asking Regina residents to utilize the Saskatchewan Art Alliance’s (SAA) letter-writing tool to contact the Mayor and your City Councillor and reaffirm your support for Regina’s arts and cultural sector.

Sign TODAY: https://www.saskartsalliance.ca/advocacy/stop-proposed-cuts-to-reginas-arts-and-community-funding/

SaskMusic's Latest

SaskMusic would like to recognize the Saskatchewan artists, and artists with Saskatchewan connections who’ve been included in this year’s top 100 Canadian songs of 2025 as published by CBC!

A committee of CBC Music producers considered streaming numbers, chart performance, record sales, cultural impact and artistic merit when putting this list together, with an emphasis on highlighting artists from all 13 provinces and territories.

Congratulations to all the Sask. artists recognized

  • #100 – Shine, Big Tones feat. Junia-T

“Over an old-school hip-hop beat, Saskatoon rapper Big Tones drops bars about overcoming adversity and uplifting as you rise,” notes CBC.

You can listen along here

  • #91. Till I Get to Heaven, Kalsey Kulyk

“Kalsey Kulyk isn’t too pressed about sticking to the straight and narrow: on her recent single, the country singer makes it clear she wants her life to leave an indelible mark, as she sings on the chorus, “Imma raise a little hell/ 'till I get to heaven,” notes CBC.

You can listen along here.

  • #56 - Listen2Me, Foxwarren

“On this fun folk single, Foxwarren blends genres and energies to create something captivating and unique, as the song's running drums are met with clean keys, fuzzy guitars, and airy vocals that bring it all together,” notes CBC.

You can listen along here.

  • #16 - Jeans (Fall On My Knees), Katie Tupper

“A slow-burn ballad about reaching a crossroads in a relationship, Tupper’s voice aches on the chorus as she sings, “I can’t fall on my knees again/ gravel in my palms and now my jeans are tearing.” (Songs You Need to Hear, Jan. 29),” notes CBC.

You can listen along here.

Read the full list here.
