Canadian Song Conference Schedule and Delegates announced

May 11, 2018 | Music PEI is pleased to announce the schedule for the Canadian Song Conference kicking off May 23. The focus of the Conference is on educating and assisting artists and music industry professionals to gain information and contacts to create multiple revenue streams in the music industry outside of live performance.

The Conference consists of discussion panels about creating alternate revenue streams and songwriting workshops. Panels will explore royalties, licensing, syncs, labels, publishing, playlists and broadcasting along with our unique Listening Sessions and showcases.

An important component of the Conference includes the Canadian Songwriter Challenge. Supported by Bell Media and in partnership with the CCMIA, Music PEI brings artists from across Canada to pair up with PEI artists. Six pairs of artists write together for two days and record demos. On May 25, they present the demos in a unique listening session to the delegates attending the Canadian Song Conference. The delegates include music supervisors, publishers, labels and broadcasters both domestic and international. These listening sessions have been a highlight of the conference the past three years and have resulted in licensing for film and TV, and have been recorded by some of the artists and used for other projects. In addition, the co-writing often results in longer-term relationships between the artists including touring and more co-writing.

The partnership through the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA) includes partnerships with Music NL, Music Nova Scotia, Music/Musique NB, Music Ontario, SaskMusic and Music BC. An artist from each of those provincial MIAs has been selected to participate. Previous participants of the program from across Canada have included Donovan Woods, Dan Mangan, Jay Semko (Northern Pikes), Carleton Stone (Port Cities), The Small Glories and many more. PEI past participants include Tim Chaisson, Dylan Menzie, Dennis Ellsworth, Meaghan Blanchard, Rachel Beck to name a few.

This year the following PEI artists will be participating: Catherine MacLellan, Josh Carter (Calm Baretta), Alicia Toner, Russell Louder, Danny Drouin and The Amanda Jackson Trio. Their pairings are Reeny Smith (Nova Scotia) with Catherine, Shaun LB (New Brunswick) with Josh, Sean Panting (Newfoundland) with Alicia, Steph Copeland (Ontario) with Russell, Shantaia (Saskatchewan) with Danny, and Alexandria Mailot (British Columbia) with The Amanda Jackson Trio. These participants will also perform in concert May 25 at Trinity United Church.

The Conference brings in top music industry professionals from Canada, the US and UK. Conference delegates include songwriter Bonnie Hayes (songs recorded by Cher, Bette Midler, David Crosby, Natalie Cole), Susan Rogers (former engineer for Prince, Bare Naked Ladies), Duncan Smith (music supervisor for Sony), Bled Celhyka (Arts & Crafts), Samuel Diaz (CBS music supervisor), Greg Torrington (Stingray Music), representatives from SOCAN, Canada Council, MROC, ACTRA, FACTOR, CFM, CIMA and a host of other delegates who will provide insights and connections for conference participants.

In addition to the workshops and panels will be a Listening Session for other participants to pitch their music as well as pre-arranged one-on-one meetings.
