Music PEI Canadian Songwriter Challenge: Submissions

May 22-26, Charlottetown PEI

Deadline: February 15, 2018

We invite submissions from Saskatchewan songwriters who would be interested in the following opportunity.

Music PEI Canadian Songwriter Challenge
Charlottetown PEI, May 22-26, 2018

Selected songwriter must be available for travel and participation from May 21-27/2018

Music PEI established the Canadian Song Conference in 2015. It has been tremendously successful in bringing music industry professionals from across Canada, the US, UK, and Australia to PEI to participate. It includes workshops and panels designed to assist artists in developing multiple revenue streams and explores the art and commerce of songs and songwriting.

The Music PEI Canadian Songwriter Challenge (supported by Bell Media) is a component of the Canadian Song Conference and was created by Music PEI through a partnership with other provincial music industry associations.

This project puts 4 PEI-based songwriters together with 4 others from across Canada to collaborate and co-write in pairs. Each pair has 2 days to write and record 2 songs in demo form. Music PEI provides the recording studio and work with other music industry associations to select participating artists. They get to present their music to all delegates (close to 30 and many music supervisors) at a special listening session and get one performance with the other participants in a songwriters' circle.

Tentative schedule:

  • Arrive in Charlottetown May 21
  • Songwriting collaborations May 23-24. At the end of each day a demo is recorded of the song that is written. Full studio with producer provided.
  • On May 26 each pair of songwriters presents their songs, in recorded demo format, to delegates in a listening session during the conference. These are pitch sessions, not critiquing sessions. The goal is to sell these songs.
  • Performance opportunity at the Canadian Songsmith Sessions Concert May 26

The sponsorship of SaskMusic, and Music PEI, will provide the selected artist/songwriter with: Travel allowance to cover flights; hotel accommodation; selected partner to work with; professional studio to work in; performance fee for the concert; caterered lunches plus per diem; and free access to the Canadian Song Conference.

Past results and feedback have been excellent. Some of the music created has been used in a variety of ways. Here is a link to a sample from the past 3 years: https://soundcloud.com/music-pei/sets/song-challenge-highlights

“Meaghan and I have decided to keep writing together whenever we can find time, and (delegate) Janesta Boudreau is pitching our songs. Thanks to all of you who organized the conference. It was one of the best experiences I've had in a long time.” - past participant Gabrielle Papillon, Nova Scotia

"I would like to thank you for inviting me to participate in the Canadian Songwriting Challenge - the week was fantastic - there is so much music talent in PEI and you guys were all so kind and hospitable - a great event, and I am very glad to have been part of it.” - past participant Jay Semko, Saskatoon

“I had a wonderful experience at PEI. You are the first conference and songwriter’s organization whereas I have witnessed such a strong dedication to your members and the talent they bring to the world. I also noticed a dedicated community and local sponsor involvement as well. Your conference should be a template to other conferences I attend.” - delegate Marcus Barone, Film Music Group LA

“Thanks so much for the invitation to this awesomely organized event! It was a very nice first experience for me in PEI. A great line-up of artists and delegates combined with very cool (but somewhat exhausting) evenings! Very interesting meetings with colleagues and partners from around the globe.” - delegate Louis-Philippe Caron, UBISOFT

“Thanks so much for sending me the music and for inviting us out to be a part of such a wonderful week. I absolutely loved PEI, the people we met and the experience as a whole. As we discussed, it is really unusual and special to have time to build friendships and spend time with artists.” delegate Sarah Bridge, Music Supervisor
