Best Sask Albums

It’s been another amazing year for Saskatchewan music. Our artists are out there winning hearts and fans worldwide, playing great shows and making incredible albums. Now we want to know YOUR thoughts on the standout recordings of 2016! Which local albums resonated with you?

We've announced the 2016 long list for your consideration. Curated from a list of over 100 qualifying albums* released this year by an industry & peer jury, it’s now up to the public to select the 'best of the best.'

Go listen. Then choose up to 10 albums only. Only one vote per IP address will be recorded - none of that 'one vote per day' business - so be sure of your picks before you hit that "vote" button!

Voting closes at midnight, Friday,  December 16. The Top 10 Saskatchewan Albums of 2016 will be posted shortly after!

Focus on Creators

Canadian creators of all types are encouraged to add their names to the letter on to help send an important message to policymakers in Ottawa.

It reads in part, "We hoped that new technology would enrich the cultural experiences for artists and consumers alike. Unfortunately, this has not happened. Instead, our work is increasingly used to monetize technology without adequately remunerating its creators."

Focus On Creators is a coalition of Canadian musicians, authors, songwriters, poets, music producers, visual artists, and other members of the creative class, which was created to bring focus to the artists’ perspective in light of some major federal cultural policy activities, including the Canadian heritage review, and the upcoming Copyright Act review in 2017. These activities present a timely opportunity to re-establish a fair working environment for creators. SaskMusic has formally joined the Focus On Creators coalition as part of the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA).

Sound Opportunities

Upcoming deadlines are posted in our Sound Opportunities section on the website! Bookmark the page for an ever-updated list of things you may be interested in!

Deadline: January 9/2017

“With such a strong music community, one can understand why over fifty percent of all the musicians performing at the festival annually are from Saskatchewan," said Artistic Director, Kevin Tobin. “Being able to showcase the world-class talent we have right here in Saskatchewan is a significant part of the festival's identity.”

For ten days each summer, the city of Saskatoon bursts into song as the Festival plays host to hundreds of world class artists. Over 85,000 hungry music fans devour the sounds of jazz, blues, funk, pop, and world music each year, with a program that spans as many genres as it does continents. The first festival took place in Saskatoon during the summer of 1987. Today it has become the second largest festival of its kind in Western Canada.

Artists may apply online or download an application at

Creative Saskatchewan

An important update has been issued from Creative Saskatchewan:

  • The Market Travel grant program (showcase support) for the Music sector will remain open until its funds have all been allocated.
  • However, Tour Support, Sound Recording, Business Capacity, Research, Creative Industries Production, and Market & Export Development are closed to Music sector applicants immediately, and will remain closed for the rest of this fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2017.

There may be other funding supports available, such as FACTOR; please contact our office if you have questions.

The following story is making its rounds. It's not a new issue, but has become quite active again lately. A big red flag (not just on musician scams) is someone sending you 'extra money' by cheque that you are asked to pass back or pass on. If something sounds off on an offer you receive, you are welcome to call us as well to discuss.
