Upcoming Open Mic Night at the Lazy Owl

We are pleased to announce this month's Open Mic Night in partnership with URSU will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 7-10pm at the Lazy Owl, University of Regina campus. Guest artist for the evening is Cami Collantes.

The event is part of the U of R's inaugural Equity Week activities (more information: https://www.ursu.ca/equityweek/ )

On Cue

On Cue Performance Hub presents The Jam: Breakout Room

On January 14, join the On Cue Performance Hub at The Exchange in Regina for their presentation of The Jam: Breakout room! Emerging Rap and Hip-Hop artists come together to for an evening of music while raising money for Regina General Hospital’s mental health unit (1D). This event is free to attend; donations will be accepted online and at the event. Doors at 7:30pm, show at 8:00pm

Upcoming Creative Saskatchewan Music Grant Deadlines

Musicians – looking for funding for your next project? Creative Saskatchewan has funding to propel your music project into 2023! Apply now for the January 11, 2023 deadlines.

Business Capacity Grant

If you have a project that will improve your business knowledge – resulting in efficiencies, expanded workforce capacity, growth, market expansion, or improved profitability – then this grant is for you!

Examples of projects funded:

  • Workshops, seminars, or training that improve business skills of yourself, your management team and/or your staff.
  • Learning opportunities including mentorships, work teams or internships that support industry capacity and job growth in Saskatchewan.
  • Workforce readiness through skill and business expertise development specific to your industry.

Market & Export Development Grant (Major Stream)

If your project will improve your business’ or product’s visibility and drive sales – then this grant is for you!

Examples of projects funded:

  • Hiring a publicist or marketing professional
  • Development of marketing materials
  • Development of your brand
  • Website design
  • Digital and print advertising campaigns

Research Grant

If your project collects market research / intelligence that aims to uncover business practices that lead to new commercial opportunities and/or emerging technologies – then this grant is for you!

Examples of projects funded:

  • Research into new markets and audiences
  • Emerging technologies research
  • Competitive research

WIMC

Women in Music Canada announce the inaugural WIM Honours!

This program is designed to celebrate and support women and gender diverse Canadian innovators and creators who have outstanding success in their field in the eligibility year (December 2021 through December 2022 for annual based categories). 

Applicants must submit interest through WIM Canada's application form by the deadline (Monday, January 16, 2023 at 11:59 PM ET). This may be done by the prospective honouree or another Canadian colleague. The honours will be presented at a dinner March 8 (International Women's Day) to cap off our IWD programming. 

Women in Music Canada values diversity, equity and inclusion, and welcome applications from innovators and creators from diverse backgrounds.

Bill S-208, An Act respecting the Declaration on the Essential Role of Artists and Creative Expression in Canada, passed its third reading in the Senate in October of 2022! This Act calls on government to develop an action plan to recognize the essential role and contribution of the arts, culture and heritage to the health and the social and economic well-being of everyone in Canada, including all aspects of social justice and reconciliation.

GRRown Up Rock Camp! Februray 3-5 in Regina

Registration is now open for the third edition of GRRown Up Rock Camp, February 3 -5 in Regina. These folks take all the cool things from their youth camp and condense them into a three-day experience. Not only will you do something kick-ass for yourself, but you're also helping them raise funds to support their youth camp. GRRown Ups is open to cis and trans women and non-binary folks 19+.

NO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. But if you already play an instrument and think camp would be a blast, this is your chance to try something new.

What you'll do

  • Learn an instrument (Drums/Guitar/Bass/Keys/Vocals)
  • Form a band
  • Write an original song
  • Perform it live

Canada's Music Incubator Artist Entrepreneur Program
Deadline January 8, 2023

Canada's Music Incubator's Artist Entrepreneur Program is specifically designed to help emerging artists and bands from all genres build their businesses and careers. Canada’s Music Incubator’s main focus during the program includes mentoring, networking, and collaboration.

In addition to working hands-on with the Canada’s Music Incubator’s and Coalition Music’s team of social media, marketing, management, promotion, publicity, funding, touring, producing, sound and songwriting experts, artists will get a chance to meet active industry professionals in music law, accounting, publishing, booking, talent buying, music supervision, radio, performing rights organizations, funding bodies, and technical production, among others. Artists will also have ongoing access to Canada’s Music Incubator and Coalition Music’s resources and expertise after the program ends.

The Saskatchewan Music Directory provides listings of freelance players available for live shows and studio recordings, and is our main referral point to those who call looking to hire musicians/singers. We want to know about you! Visit www.saskmusic.org to login to your existing account, or to join (free 'subscriber' option available) and add your listings. (Sask-based players only.)

The more information the better! Remember to include your specific instrument, styles you specialize in/techniques (ie fingerstyle, rhythm, lead), location, description of experience, and links to videos/examples if available for best results. You can create multiple listings with different descriptions if you play multiple instruments! Think about what people would want to know before reaching out to a player, and include that information in your entry.

Check out Malty National in Regina on January 24 from 6-9pm for open auditions! Folks will perform a brief sample of their musical talent and are encouraged to trade contact info with fellow performers or attendees at the end of the night for further collaboration.
