Capturing a ‘normal year’ of music urgently needed

SaskMusic has engaged Nordicity to develop a profile and economic impact assessment of Saskatchewan’s music industry.

With your help, we will estimate the economic impact, social benefits, and financial health of the local music scene, as well as define its contribution to Saskatchewan’s economy.

Why is the survey important for you?

  • You can help SaskMusic develop an accurate baseline of the size of our sector pre-COVID. Your responses will enable us to calculate the impacts of the music sector and  will be crucial to future advocacy and rebuilding efforts post Covid19.
  • It is your chance to have your voice be heard by government and other policy and funding decision-makers and influencers.
  • Your input will help make this research more suitable and useful to you. The final report will provide information about your music sector that will be helpful to you, other industry members and government alike.

Who should complete this questionnaire?
Every individual person, company and organization that is involved in Saskatchewan's music sector, including:

  • Artists, musicians, songwriters, composers
  • Live crew support including sound and lighting techs, rigging, and event producers
  • Agents, managers and bookers
  • Labels and recording studios
  • Festivals and venues
  • Retail stores
  • Music teachers and teaching studios
  • Any individuals with activities related to music
  • Funding bodies or music associations

WCMA, and BreakOut West, and Byta Present: #HowWeListen
Free Online Event

The Western Canadian Music Alliance (WCMA) and BreakOut West, Western Canada's largest music industry event, and Byta, the platform for securely sending digital audio files and streams, are excited to announce that they will partner to present a five part series titled #HowWeListen. Beginning in January 2021, these will be conversations focused on music discovery with representatives from within the music industry. Five discussions, each focusing on different genres of music creation: Folk, Country, Hip-Hop, Francophone and Rock/Indie.

How industry insiders listen to and discover new music is one of the most important things for artists and their teams to understand. These are the insights artists require in order to properly craft pitches and to target how potential audiences might hear about them.
Upcoming panel discussion dates are as follows:

  • March 24 – Francophone
  • April 7 – Folk

NEW INFO: Strong Recovery Adaptation Rebate (SRAR)

The Strong Recovery Adaptation Rebate is established to reimburse eligible small businesses in Saskatchewan for incremental expenses made to adapt their business models to operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial assistance includes a payment of up to $5,000 for 50% of total eligible business-adaptation investments made by the applicant between April 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021. The minimum business expenditure that will be reimbursed is $300 (which would mean a $150 government contribution).

Business adaptation investments include incremental, one-time expenditures aimed at establishing physical barriers or reconfiguring space to operate safely, providing services through digital tools, providing new or different services or products, and shifting to delivery or curb-side services. Eligible expenditures are intended to contribute to the completion of an asset or project that is lasting and not transactional, for example, a website or renovation. Eligible expenses include website development or enhancements to support curbside pickup or delivery, initial costs for new software, costs of renovations and lasting equipment needed to operate safely like hand sanitation stations, or contactless payment. They do not include staff costs, personal protective equipment such as masks, hand sanitizer or cleaning products.

Applications will be accepted from December 22 to March 31, 2021.
