Music Contracts 101!

Join us for a new Skills Lab with entertainment lawyer and musician Kurt Dahl!

We'll examine the essential contracts artists are likely to encounter throughout their musical careers, and cover the major deal points and possible red flags in each. Kurt will walk participants through:

  • Recording Agreements (Licensing or full Record deal)
  • Publishing Agreements (3 types)
  • Management Agreements
  • Artist Development Agreements
  • Producer Agreements

This event will appeal to artists at all levels of their careers, whether emerging or established. FREE for SaskMusic members, $20 for non-members.

Award Qualifying Period: January 1, 2016-March 21, 2018

For the artistic awards, the release requirements are that you need to have released a minimum of 3 songs to radio, retail, or online between January 1, 2016 and March 21, 2018. The exception is Recording of the year, which requires an album release of at least 30 minutes or 6 songs.

Please also remember that SaskMusic members can nominate deserving Industry professionals for FREE! The categories are Audio Engineering, Community Excellence, Excellence in Visual Design, Impact in Artist Development, Impact in Live Music, and Impact in Music Marketing.

Festival Showcase Submissions
You’ll need to provide 3 tracks for evaluation, but you don’t have to have a current album release. All genres are invited to apply!

Award Jurors
Each year, WCMA solicits help from its membership and key industry persons regionally and nationally to act as qualified jurors. Jury members are volunteering members of the music industry who are experts within their field and genre and represent the industry at large. Their knowledge and ability to interpret the current music landscape regionally and nationally makes them qualified to help select the WCMA nominees.

Former and new jurists are encouraged to apply.

1st round jury reviews will start April 2 and end April 20. 2nd round jury and member voting will start May 2 and end May 16 (dates subject to change).

2. Conference Registration
Right now the extra-early bird discount is 20%, until March 21. Early bird rate follows from March 22–Aug 7.

This once-a-year event includes a 4-Day Conference, the Festival, and Western Canadian Music Awards. BreakOut West is the primary event hosted by the Western Canadian Music Alliance.

Surround yourself with hundreds of like-minded career musicians, and international industry professionals for a weekend of career boosting opportunities. Gain valuable insights and connections through speaker panels, one-on-one networking, and live industry showcases. Early bird pricing is on, and remember to register for one-on-one spots as soon as they're announced, as they fill up quickly!

Music Heals

A Night Out For Music Heals: March 3

On the first Saturday of March, we celebrate Music Therapy Awareness Month with A Night Out for Music Heals.

This annual event brings together the nightlife and bar industry to raise funds and awareness for music therapy programs across Canada. In 2017 Music Heals raised over $19,900, with 90 venues participating coast to coast!

Saskatchewan venues can get involved with a great cause: participating venues donate $1 from each admission charge on March 3. Register your venue now: nightout@musicheals.ca. Venues on board so far include Bushwakker Brewing Company, Lot Club, and Revival Music Room in Regina, and The Root Bistro in Lloydminster. 

The Music Heals Charitable Foundation helps raise awareness of the healing powers of Music and to help fundraise for Music Therapy and related services across Canada.

 
 

A few quick artist highlights. Congrats to:

Tenille Arts, who will be performing her new song "Moment of Weakness," co-written with Adam Wheeler and Rick Huckaby, on ABC's The Bachelor, airing January 29. The song will be available everywhere following the show. 

The Dead South on an amazing week last week - gaining 999,000+ more video views on their YouTube channel!

The Sheepdogs on their #1 song at Canadian Rock radio this week, with "I've Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be". Their new album "Changing Colours" drops next week!

Folk On The Rocks Music Festival - Performance Opportunity

Canada Plays: Up Stream Music Fest & Summit - Showcase Opportunity

June 1-3, 2018 in Seattle WA

Canadian artists are invited to apply to showcase at Upstream Music Festival + Summit in the heart of downtown Seattle. Upstream is a three-day music festival and industry summit where attendees can discover acclaimed national artists performing alongside rising stars from the Northwest. Upstream transforms Seattle's Pioneer Square neighbourhood into a walkable mixtape June 1-3 and includes a main stage experience, and over 15 intimate venues throughout Pioneer Square. Canada has been invited to showcase the best of our country among 200+ other emerging artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Canadian Songwriting Competition

Songwriters are invited to enter the second annual Canadian Songwriting Competition. This year’s competition will be bigger and better, with a cash prize of $10,000, and over $40,000 in prizes to be won. Judges include acclaimed artists, and industry tastemakers in A&R, radio, festival programming, publishing and more. CSC is also thrilled to partner with the SickKids Foundation to help raise funds for in-hospital music programming. 

 
 

Queen City Rocks Contest

Deadline: February 2, 2018

Rock Station 104.9 The Wolf, The Exchange, and Long and McQuade Musical Instruments present Queen City Rocks. There will be up to 5 run-off performance weeks. The band scoring the highest total of points during their run-off will advance to the Grand Finale on March 29. Five bands perform each night in randomly selected order. Each band receives 20 minutes on the clock (with a maximum of 1 cover song). Bands will be awarded points by an adjudication panel based on a number of categories (stagecraft, songcraft, vocal performance, etc).  Professionalism play a factor in the points process.

CBCMusic.ca Searchlight Competition

Searchlight is CBC Music's annual contest to determine Canada's best undiscovered musical talent. Listener feedback and online voting determines the artists who advance to the final four. This year's incredible prizes include a spot in the prestigious Allan Slaight Juno Master Class in Toronto, Canada’s premiere talent development program,  a week-long residency at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre in Calgary, and performances at JunoFest 2019 and the 2018 CBC Music Festival at Echo Beach, Toronto.

Frogfest 2018 - Performance Opportunity

The Great Escape - Showcasing

The Great Escape is the festival for new music, showcasing 450 emerging artists from all over the world in 30+ walkable venues across Brighton. TGE is attended by the music industry who are on the hunt for the next big thing. SaskMusic will be on hand supporting any Sask artists who are invited to perform this year. Artists are encouraged to apply ASAP as submissions are reviewed as they come in. 

 
 

Indigenous Music Awards Nominations

Deadline: February 14, 2018

Submissions are accepted from Indigenous recording artists and music industry professionals from around the world; voting is conducted by music industry professionals. Submissions must have been released between February 15/16 to February 14/18 to be eligible.

The 2018 Indigenous Music Awards along with the IMA Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented on May 18 in Winnipeg MB. Traditional categories of the awards will be presented at the Manito Ahbee International Pow Wow. 2018

Categories include: Best Blues, Best Country, Best Folk, Best Gospel, Best Inuit, Indigenous Language or Francophone, Best Instrumental, Best Hand Drum, Best Peyote, Best Pow Wow - Traditional, Best Pow Wow - Contemporary, Best Pop, Best Rap/Hip Hop, Best Rock, Best Music Radio Program, Best Television Music Program, Best International Indigenous Release, Best Music Video, Best New Artist, Best Producer/Engineer, Best Radio Single.
