Hope everyone had a lovely holiday and great New Year's celebration!

As we break into 2018 we are busy planning new workshops, showcases and other exciting activities. Our staff Ben and Brittney fill you in on some current news from our office.

Erica Maier

Welcome Erica Maier!

Please join us in welcoming Erica Maier to our team as Program Coordinator, effective January 3.

Erica brings a variety of experience in event planning, educational initiatives, administration, and customer service, as well as being an active musician. She has two degrees from the University of Saskatchewan in Archaeology (Honours) and Biology. Erica has been an organizer, volunteer, and instructor with Girls Rock Saskatoon since 2014. She has hosted on CFCR 90.5 FM, Saskatoon’s Community Radio Station, since 2012, and currently co-hosts ‘Hysterio,’ CFCR and Saskatoon’s only radio program highlighting the music of women, non-binary, and feminist-allied musicians. She is the singer/guitarist for Saskatoon band, The Garrys.

Erica will be manning the front desk in our Saskatoon office, and assisting in the development and delivery of our various programs. We look forward to introducing you to Erica at one our upcoming events!

  • Saskatoon - Wednesday, January 10, 7-9pm at the SaskMusic office (The Two Twenty Building), 202-226 20th St. W. Please use the doors next to Odd Couple.
  • Webinar - live online Wednesday January 10, 7-9pm. Join us from wherever you are! Please register in advance; link to participate will be sent out to registrants prior to the event.

Get to know more about FACTOR Programs available to artists and labels at our free info sessions! Megan Jones from FACTOR will join us to share insight about what exactly FACTOR is, how to set up an artist profile and get your applications started, popular programs artists can access, and tips on how to improve your chances of successfully accessing funding.

This will be a beneficial session for those with little or no experience in applying through the FACTOR system, as well as those who are familiar with their operations but want to learn about updates for 2018. There will be plenty of time for Q&A afterwards, so bring your questions!

Hockey-loving artists! Apply to perform for the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour in Regina, February 17-18/2018!
Deadline Wednesday, January 10, 5pm

We're accepting submissions from high-energy, family friendly original Sask bands in any genre. Performances will be on a heated stage and artists will be compensated for their performance. Final selections will be made by The Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour and SaskMusic; up to 4 local artists will be booked. Preference will be given to bands from the Regina area.

The CMW Festival is your chance to perform in front of thousands of industry insiders from Canada and around the world. Voted the UK’s Best Metropolitan Festival at the UK Festival Awards, Liverpool Sound City is a 2-day extravaganza of incredible live music, art and culture. Sound City will take place May 4-6 in the heart of Liverpool.Attended by over 22,000 people, showcase your musical talents to thousands of music lovers and music industry delegates from over 30 different countries.

SaskMusic may have a presence at this event, however, you must apply for an official showcase to be considered for any SaskMusic opportunities that develop.

Songwriters are invited to enter the second annual Canadian Songwriting Competition. This year’s competition will be bigger and better, with a cash prize of $10,000, and over $40,000 in prizes to be won. Judges include acclaimed artists, and industry tastemakers in A&R, radio, festival programming, publishing and more. CSC is also thrilled to partner with the SickKids Foundation to help raise funds for in-hospital music programming. 



May 17-19/2018, Brighton UK
Deadline: February 12/2018

The Great Escape is the festival for new music, showcasing 450 emerging artists from all over the world in 30+ walkable venues across Brighton. TGE is attended by the music industry who are on the hunt for the next big thing. A convention runs alongside the gigs featuring insightful panels, topical debates, keynote speeches and networking opportunities in abundance.

SaskMusic will be on hand supporting any Sask artists who are invited to perform this year. Artists are encouraged to apply ASAP as submissions are reviewed as they come in.

Ongoing, Regina SK

Regina restaurant seeking to add live music to their venue and seeking artists in jazz and related genres for bookings. Instrumental jazz is the preferred genre, but other performers who might fit could include adult contemporary/pop/folk/classical mixes. Group size preferred is solos/duos/compact trios. Vocal groups may fit but note that the artist will be performing in a low-volume, background dinner music type setting. Performances will be approximately 3 sets over the dinner seatings. This call is not restricted to Regina-based artists.



July 20-22/2018, Yellowknife NWT
Deadline: January 30, 2018

Folk On The Rocks 2018 (FOTR) is a three day music festival held on the sunny shores of Long Lake, just outside of Yellowknife. FOTR is looking for two family-friendly artists to join their roster of performers. Flights and accommodations will be covered for selected artists. Monetary compensation is provided and negotiated at the time of booking. 

Celebrating its 38th year, FOTR is one of Canada’s top summertime music and cultural festivals, drawing performers from the NWT, Nunavut and all across Canada for the North’s biggest party under the midnight sun. The festival boasts more than 24 hours of programming on five stages, including a children's area and a beer garden, promising fun and enjoyment for all ages. 


Queen City Rocks Contest

Deadline: February 2/2018

Is back for its 5th and biggest year yet. Regina’s Rock Station 104.9 The Wolf, The Exchange, and Long and McQuade Musical Instruments present Queen City Rocks 2017.

There will be up to 5 run-off performance weeks. The band scoring the highest total of points during their run-off will advance to the Grand Finale on March 29/18. Five bands perform each night in randomly selected order. Each band receives 20 minutes on the clock (with a maximum of 1 cover song). Bands will be awarded points by an adjudication panel based on a number of categories (stagecraft, songcraft, vocal performance, etc).  Professionalism play a factor in the points process.  That includes EVERYTHING about your group. Social media presence, press kit, logo, availability of merch (you can sell it the night you perform) all make an impact towards the final score.
