Join SaskMusic President and Entertainment Lawyer, Kurt Dahl, as he covers the ins and outs of Band Agreements! It’s easy to get caught up in the success of your creative endeavors, but a Band Agreement is essential to avoid any potential hiccups further down the road. Things such as determining who owns the rights to your songs, the share of profit and loss considerations, who owns the name of your group, what happens when a member decides to leave, how band decisions are made are all conversations that a band should be having, regardless of where they're at in their career. No two band agreements are the same, so bring your questions!

It's free for current members, or $20 for non-members.

Bring your laptop/notebook and let's get started! This is for all the marketing-plan-beginners out there. Our Communications & Operations Manager, Lorena Kelly, will lead you gently into building the foundation of your own comprehensive and effective Marketing Plan, which can be used to help guide your career goals and for future funding applications. We'll provide the template, you fill in the rest! This will be a very interactive session, so bring all your questions and get ready to put your vision into words. Already have a solid marketing plan? You're overqualified for this session!

Co-Writing Rooms

SaskMusic is launching a monthly, collaborative songwriting series in Regina and Saskatoon for our members. It’s been an idea that’s been floating around since we received such an overwhelmingly positive response to our last Songwriting Masterclass.

This ‘event’ will be facilitated one Sunday per month. 3-4 songwriters per city will be matched together for a 2-3 hour co-writing session. We hope to get interest from songwriters with interests in all different genres and at various skill levels. We’ll provide a comfy space, snacks and beverages, and a facilitator; you bring the creativity and an open mind!

The goal will be for writers to try writing with people they may not have approached on their own, to build new relationships, gain experience in collaborating and co-writing, and generally advance their craft by stretching themselves in new ways.

For those who participated in past master classes, songwriting challenges, or Nashville writing rooms, it’ll be a similar idea. Once we have a sufficient number of writers signed up to participate in a given city, we’ll launch the first date there. We are open to doing this in any locations that there is enough interest shown.

CSC sask

Canadian Songwriting Challenge 2017

Saskatchewan Edition, June 9-11, 2017 Saskatoon
Deadline May 22, 2017

SaskMusic, in partnership with the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA) and Bell Media, is presenting a three-day songwriting event.

In this songwriting retreat, a mix of experienced and emerging songwriters will be selected and organized into groups to collaborate, then record demos of their newly written songs. Selected songwriters will receive some instruction on co-writing etiquette, agreements, and songwriting technique, and have an opportunity to network and establish permanent collaborative partnerships.

Songwriters considered for this opportunity must:

  • Be available full days on June 10 & 11, along with a seminar on the evening of June 9
  • Be a current SaskMusic member and resident of Saskatchewan
  • Be at an intermediate to advanced level of songwriting (you have a catalogue of material, had material recorded, etc). Previous co-writing experience is not required.

SaskMusic members of all genres are encouraged to apply, including participants from our 2015 and/or 2016 CSC events. A jury of industry professionals will select participants based on level of songwriting experience and, if possible, to reflect a range of genres. Accommodations and travel expenses are not included. Lunches and refreshments will be provided. There is no registration charge for those selected.

Music PEI Canadian Songwriter Challenge, Charlottetown PEI

Congratulations to Tyler Gilbert (Regina) and Ross Neilsen (Saskatoon) who have been selected to participate in the 2017 Music PEI Canadian Songwriter Challenge in Charlottetown. After going through a call for submissions and external jury, they were selected to represent Saskatchewan and will be flown out to participate from May 10-13. Each writer will be paired with an artist from PEI for a few days of co-writing and recording, and will have the opportunity to present their music to over 30 industry delegates at a special listening session, along with one performance with the other selected participants in a songwriters circle. We’ll be excited to see the results this collaboration will yield!

Music PEI established the Canadian Song Conference in 2015. It includes workshops and panels designed to assist artists in developing multiple revenue streams and explores the art and commerce of songs and songwriting.

Focus on Creators

PLEASE READ, SIGN, AND SHARE!

Canadian creators of all types are encouraged to add their names to the letter on www.focusoncreators.ca to help send an important message to policymakers in Ottawa.

It reads in part, "We hoped that new technology would enrich the cultural experiences for artists and consumers alike. Unfortunately, this has not happened. Instead, our work is increasingly used to monetize technology without adequately remunerating its creators."

Focus On Creators is a coalition of Canadian musicians, authors, songwriters, poets, music producers, visual artists, and other members of the creative class, which was created to bring focus to the artists’ perspective in light of some major federal cultural policy activities, including the Canadian heritage review, and the Copyright Act review in 2017. These activities present a timely opportunity to re-establish a fair working environment for creators. SaskMusic has formally joined the Focus On Creators coalition as part of the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA).
