Submissions are invited NOW for the
Music PEI Songwriter Challenge, May 10-13, Charlottetown PEI

One Saskatchewan songwriter will be selected for an expenses-paid co-writing weekend and paid showcase opportunity under this initiative. Hurry, deadline is 5PM Monday, April 10!

You must be an established songwriter and a current Individual or Band Member of SaskMusic to apply.

Music PEI established the Canadian Song Conference in 2015. Both it and the follow up in 2016 were tremendously successful in bringing music industry professionals from across Canada, the US, UK and Australia to PEI to participate. It includes workshops and panels designed to assist artists in developing multiple revenue streams and explores the art and commerce of songs and songwriting.

This project puts songwriters from PEI together with others from across Canada to collaborate and co-write in pairs. Each pair has 2 days to write and record 2 songs in demo form. Music PEI will provide the recording studio and will work with other MIAs to select participating artists. They get to present their music to all delegates (including music supervisors) at a special listening session and they get one performance with the other participants in a songwriters' circle.

Saskatchewan application deadline: 5PM, Monday, April 10, 2017

Canadian Songwriting Challenge 2017

Saskatchewan Edition, June 9-11, 2017, Saskatoon
Deadline TBA

SaskMusic, in partnership with the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA) and Bell Media, is presenting a three-day songwriting event.

In this songwriting retreat, a mix of experienced and emerging songwriters will be selected and organized into groups to collaborate, then record demos of their newly written songs. Selected songwriters will receive some instruction on co-writing etiquette, agreements, and songwriting technique, and have an opportunity to network and establish permanent collaborative partnerships.

Songwriters considered for this opportunity must:

  • Be available full days on June 10 & 11, along with a seminar on the evening of June 9
  • Be a current SaskMusic member and resident of Saskatchewan
  • Be at an intermediate to advanced level of songwriting (you have a catalogue of material, had material recorded, etc). Previous co-writing experience is not required.

SaskMusic members of all genres are encouraged to apply, including participants from our 2015 and/or 2016 CSC events. A jury of industry professionals will select participants based on level of songwriting experience and, if possible, to reflect a range of genres. Accommodations and travel expenses are not included. Lunches and refreshments will be provided. There is no registration charge for those selected.

Focus on Creators

PLEASE READ, SIGN, AND SHARE!

Canadian creators of all types are encouraged to add their names to the letter on www.focusoncreators.ca to help send an important message to policymakers in Ottawa.

It reads in part, "We hoped that new technology would enrich the cultural experiences for artists and consumers alike. Unfortunately, this has not happened. Instead, our work is increasingly used to monetize technology without adequately remunerating its creators."

Focus On Creators is a coalition of Canadian musicians, authors, songwriters, poets, music producers, visual artists, and other members of the creative class, which was created to bring focus to the artists’ perspective in light of some major federal cultural policy activities, including the Canadian heritage review, and the Copyright Act review in 2017. These activities present a timely opportunity to re-establish a fair working environment for creators. SaskMusic has formally joined the Focus On Creators coalition as part of the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA).
