Regina’s own Bushwakker Brewpub is taking the motto ‘local only’ to a whole new level.

On Saskatchewan Day long weekend 2012, Bushwakker launched “Redbeard Radio at The Bushwakker”, making the brewpub the first venue in the province to have a background music playlist filled with Saskatchewan artists only.

Promoting and growing the Saskatchewan music industry has been an important goal for Bushwakker throughout the years. This initiative was made possible with the help of SaskMusic and 91.3 FM CJTR’s Jeff “Redbeard” Corbett.

Lorena Kelly at SaskMusic helped the brewpub obtain the proper licensing and Corbett’s huge collection of Saskatchewan music spanning five decades has started off the Bushwakker playlist. It contains over 3,000 songs and is growing. A video monitor has been installed to display the name of the artist, album and song title being played. Joni Mitchell, Colin James, The Sheepdogs, Little Miss Higgins, Rah Rah and the Library Voices are a few of the more familiar artists on the “Redbeard Radio at The Bushwakker” playlist and defunct Saskatchewan artists such as The Blazers, New Sky Embrace, 96 Tears, The Age of Electric and Humphrey and the Dumptrucks receive regular rotation. Saskatchewan has a huge catalogue of music and The Bushwakker will play as much of it as possible, and hopes to continue to add to the playlist by encouraging Saskatchewan artists to submit their recordings.

The Bushwakker has been a host venue for live jazz, blues and folk artists for well over a decade. Most of the performers hail from Saskatchewan. The arts wall has been featuring the works of local artists for over 15 years. Internationally recognized local artist Joe Fafard designed the Bushwakker logo that adorns the brewpub’s t-shirts and many of their bottles of beer. Locally produced foods are used in its kitchen whenever feasible. Saskatchewan-produced wines, ciders, spirits and craft beers are available and, of course, award-winning Bushwakker beer is brewed right on the premises. The majority of the barley used in the brewpub’s beer production is grown right here on the prairies. Part of the evolution of embracing the local surroundings will now extend further to create a musical atmosphere reflective of Saskatchewan!
