APTN Announced Lineup For Aboriginal Day Live and Celebration

Celebrate Aboriginal heritage, culture, and entertainment across Canada

Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) is proud to announce its artist line up for Aboriginal Day Live and Celebration, an annual celebration of National Aboriginal Day and the summer solstice, on Saturday, June 23, 2012. Two concerts are scheduled: one at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba and the other at the First Nations University of Canada in Regina, Saskatchewan. Both will be broadcast live across the country on APTN and APTN HD.

In its sixth year, these free concerts will feature some of the biggest names in Aboriginal music. Hosts for the Winnipeg event include Don Kelly, star of the APTN hit series Fish out of Water; Candy Palmater, comedian and star of The Candy Show; and APTN’s own Upload personality Chantelle. Hosts for the Regina event include Aboriginal DJ and actress Crystle Lightning and First Nations producer and actress Jennifer Podemski. Besides the line up of music, APTN is hosting its celebration, a day-long schedule of family-friendly events.

The Regina line up includes:
  • The Local Onlyz, from Regina play upbeat, live instrumented hip-hop music.
  • Plex, a daring emcee and artist from Edmonton.
  • Riva, a singer-songwriter who incorporates voice, cello, organ, and guitar in her music.
  • Stevie Salas and Bernard Fowler, who have spent the last three years bringing their unique blend of funk/blues and rock to the world playing global festivals and clubs.
  • Samian, a poet, musician, and singer from Quebec who has relearned his Algonquin mother tongue and incorporates it in his work.
  • Buffy Sainte-Marie, the legendary artist originally from Piapot Cree Indian reserve in Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan will grace the stage with pop, blues and as she would say, “stuff that is fun to dance to.”

The Winnipeg line-up includes:
  • Christa Couture, a Cree/Métis songwriter.
  • Beatrice Deer, an Inuk singer from Quaqtaq, Quebec who mixes modern music with traditional Inuit throat singing.
  • Indian City, a fusion of contemporary pop and rock with hints of traditional layers, featuring vocals from Don Amero, Pamela Davis, William Prince, Ray “Coco” Stevens, and Buffy Handel.
  • Inez, a Sto:lo singer songwriter who blends traditional native sounds with contemporary hip hop and R&B.
  • Adam James, a popular country songster all the way from Australia with a passion for Indigenous education.
  • Joey Stylez, a hip hop artist from Moosmin First Nations. He is joined by Lil Pappie, a talented and urban pop artist known for strong hooks, clever lyrics, and unique beats.
  • Kashtin, one of the most successful First Nations folk-rock groups in history—this duo of Florent Vollant and Claude MacKenzie will perform their classics in a one-night exclusive reunion.
