Jeffery Straker grew up studying classical piano in small-town Saskatchewan and has gone on to perform over 100 shows per year across Canada and the world. His folk-pop songs with their rootsy-storytelling have the power to take us floating out on a northern lake in a “Birch Bark Canoe”, and to introduce us to the lives of people like “Mrs. Bell”, from his small prairie town’s sole South-Asian family. A clever lyricist, his energetic piano-based songwriting is a reminder of the power of a singer/songwriter accompanying himself on the keyboard. And when you add an orchestra to his special storytelling ability and sense of humour, the result is a dynamic and memorable concert experience.
Critics draw comparisons to the likes of Harry Chapin, Kris Kristofferson, Carole King & Billy Joel. The Calgary Herald has written: “Gifted in his ability to write intricate story songs buoyed by melodies that fit a listener’s ears like a beloved broken-in glove.”
