FEATURE: Liberty Skye, 2018 CIPS Rep for Regina
Come out and support our incredibly passionate and talented youth poets, and raise funds to help our feature poet, Liberty Skye, travel to Vancouver this April to represent Regina at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam (CIPS)!
Feature bio: Liberty Skye has been a part of Regina’s spoken word community for over one year now and she recently won the local Regina qualifier slam to represent Regina at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam (CIPS) in Vancouver in April of this year. Spoken word may be relatively new to her but, coming from a long line of storytellers, writing has been a lifelong passion.
Finding slam poetry was like coming home for her, like a fish to water. She loves this style of writing because of its authenticity and rawness. Liberty Skye typically writes about challenging the status quo and moving towards a new world order where equality and safety for all is realized. Plus, she likes to make sure she throws in at least one swear word per poem just for fun.
A self-described “soft-spoken” slam poet, she loves to create pieces that uplift and empower, not only herself, but hopefully others too. A natural introvert who battles stage fright (don’t we all?), spoken word pushes her boundaries in many positive ways. It is where she found her voice. She is looking forward to sharing it with you.

YOUTH STAGE
Regina Word Up Youth is Regina's only youth-specific spoken word performance series.

A Youth Stage is an opportunity to share work with our peers and greater community. No scores and all support, this event is a great opportunity for youth (14-22) who want more exposure or practice, or want to share something that doesn’t usually fit within our regular poetry slams. Rants, stories, jokes (the punnier, the better!) songs, or poems are all welcome on our stage.

Have something you want to share that we didn’t list? We love creativity, and we would probably let you perform…just ask us! Regina Word Up Youth Stage is for youth of all skill levels interested in sharing stories – of any kind. We celebrate all styles of writing and voices, and encourage our community to support our powerful poets.

There is a gentle time limit of 5 minutes per person to allow enough time for all of our community. If you have more to share than that, we will allow you another five-minute block after everyone has performed, time permitting.

Audience members, come prepared with snapping fingers and a good pair of lungs, as always!

After the youth stage, we host a community stage for ALL AGES. A community stage is an opportunity to share work with our community. No scores and all support, this event is a great opportunity for folks who want more exposure or practice, or want to share something that doesn’t usually fit within our regular poetry slams.

If you are interested in volunteering, sponsoring, supporting, collaborating or have ideas that may benefit Regina Word Up and the development of our spoken word communities, please contact Regina Word Up at reginawordup@gmail.com or Creative City Centre at spokenword@creativecitycentre.ca

GUIDELINES
At the Creative City Centre we always strive for inclusivity and respect in the community both inside and out of our facility, which is why we have compiled the following guidelines to remember both for our events and also in everyday life.

• We encourage respecting the way folks self identify, without assuming gender, sexuality, orientation, religion, or ability.
• We understand that at times folks may need to leave or engage in other methods of self-care, and that’s okay. If we can keep ourselves safe, we can encourage safe and healthy communities.
• We encourage the availability of gender-neutral washrooms for all guests.
• We encourage language that promotes inclusivity, education, and awareness and dislike all forms of explicit ignorance including, but not limited to, hate speech, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and classism.
• We encourage the culture of consent meaning we respect people’s physical, verbal, and emotional boundaries. This means respecting that some people might not want to be hugged and if you want to engage physically in any way with a person it is important to ask permission before doing so.
