SaskMusic Offices

1831 College Ave., Regina, SK, Canada

SaskMusic, in a multi-year partnership with the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA) and Bell Media, is pleased to announce Part Two of the 2019 Canadian Songwriter Challenge! Due to the overwhelming response to our initial intake, we've decided to add a full day of co-writing for those who were unable to participate in the first portion of the CSC in Saskatoon. Our mentor for this portion is the fantastic Belle Plaine.

On July 14, a mix of experienced and emerging songwriters will be selected and organized into groups of three to collaborate and co-write. Songwriters chosen for this event will receive some class instruction on co-writing etiquette, agreements, and songwriting technique, and have an opportunity to network and establish permanent collaborative partnerships.

Songwriters considered for this opportunity must:

- Be available for the full day (9-5) on July 14
- Be a current SaskMusic member (please call or email if you have questions 1-800-347-0676)
- Be at an intermediate to advanced level of songwriting (you have a catalogue of material, had material recorded, etc). Previous co-writing experience is not required.
- Be willing to enter into co-writing agreements specific to each song created during this event
- Agree to be photographed/videotaped for our reporting purposes

SaskMusic members of all genres are encouraged to apply. Participants from all previous songwriting challenges, including the May 2019 version in Saskatoon, are welcome to apply again.  A jury of industry professionals will select participants based on level of songwriting experience and, if possible, to reflect a range of genres.

There is no registration charge for those selected. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. There will be a travel bursary available to those who are selected and who reside substantially outside of Regina, which can go towards the cost of travel/hotel etc (details will be provided after selections).

Please note there is no recording component to this event.

Belle Plaine is the stage name of Melanie Berglund, a singer/songwriter who was raised on the Canadian prairies near the hamlet of Fosston, Saskatchewan – population: 45. Belle’s reverence for artists who defy categorization has led her to create a brand of roots music that combines vintage blues and swing tones of the 1940s with classic country styles made popular in the heyday of the Grand Ole Opry.

Belle’s 2018 album Malice, Mercy, Grief and Wrath highlights her tremendous voice and prodigious songwriting abilities, and showcases her varied musical influences from Link Wray and the Everly Brothers, to Cole Porter and Gillian Welch. The record was recorded and produced by Jason Plumb [The Dead South]. With lyrics that contemplate the ephemeral nature of life, she also manages to address themes that are persistently unfolding in our lives: forgiveness, redemption and hope.

Malice, Mercy, Grief & Wrath was named Album of the Year at the 2018 Saskatchewan Music Awards, and Belle is currently nominated for Roots Solo Artist of the Year in the 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards.
