In this Skills Lab, Entertainment Lawyer and SaskMusic Board President Kurt Dahl will examine the essential contracts artists are likely to encounter throughout their musical careers, and cover the major deal points and possible red flags in each. He will walk participants through:

  • Recording Agreements (Licensing or full Record deal)
  • Publishing Agreements (3 types)
  • Management Agreements
  • Artist Development Agreements
  • Producer Agreements

This skills lab will appeal to artists at all levels of their careers, whether emerging or established. For those who can't join us in person, a webinar option will be available from wherever you are on Wednesday, January 31.


Kurt Dahl has been actively involved in the Canadian music industry for nearly twenty years as a touring musician, entertainment lawyer, and public speaker. He wrote his Master of Laws thesis in 2009 on the future of the music industry, and has practiced entertainment law in Vancouver and Saskatoon since 2010. He tours the country regularly with his band One Bad Son, working with some of the biggest names in the music business. His articles about various music industry topics have been published around the world, and can be found on his website www.LawyerDrummer.com. Kurt previously served on the SaskMusic Board from 2008-2012, and in 2013 was invited to sit on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan. Kurt and his wife Julia moved home to Saskatoon in 2014, and recently welcomed their son Levon into the world.
