MKM Management Services’ Shane Matthewson is a JUNO and Western Canadian Music Award-winning musician and Chartered Professional Accountant with 10 years of public accounting, income tax, and small business management experience. Through managing his own band KEN mode, he has gained the experience and expertise to assist musicians and record labels in navigating the choppy waters of the today’s music industry environment.

Matthewson will present an overview of accounting and income tax from the perspective of a typical musician/music company. Topics of discussion include:

  • Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) criteria for deductible expenses, including specifically identifying areas in which many musicians miss deductions
  • Accounting Basics – Accrual vs Cash Accounting
  • Sales taxes – GST/HST and PST
  • Grants and Subsidies – Accounting and Taxes
  • Business Structures – Corporations, Partnerships, and Sole Proprietorships
  • Bring your questions - and leave more confident dealing with this year’s tax season.
