The 21st century thankfully has marked the rediscovered the music of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

The Chevalier was a champion fencer, lead a battalion to war, was friends with Marie Antoinette, a regular at the court of Louis XVI, a violinist, a conductor, an impresario, and composer too! His musical stamp is forever imprinted on Paris thanks to his magnificent career and his passion for creating.

The concert features not only the music of Chevalier, but also Haydn’s Symphony 82, “The Bear”.
Gaining its nickname because it was the most amount of musicians Haydn had put on stage to date (a bear of an orchestra!), “The Bear” is the first of Haydn’s Paris Symphonies, works that were commissioned by Chevalier…who also happened to be holding the baton on the podium at the symphony’s premiere.

The performance features the SSO’s Principal Flute Allison Miller in a performance Francois Devienne’s 7th Flute Concerto. Devienne was not only a contemporary and friend of the Chevalier’s, but he played in Chevalier’s orchestra too!
