Al Muirhead’s new project is his Canadian Quintet, releasing the album “Undertones" in June 2018. The album features Muirhead on the rare and unique bass trumpet, on which he is one of the few living masters in the world. His quintet comprises Reg Schwager (guitar), 2014 SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival Special Recognition Award recipient Kelly Jefferson (saxophone), Neil Swainson (bass) and 2009 SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival Special Recognition Award recipient Ted Warren (drums). The project repertoire, a mixture of originals and standards, is an important showcase of the warm and smooth tones of the bass trumpet, perfected by an almost 70-year musical career.
