The Strange Valentines now residing in Regina, Saskatchewan are a Folk/Rock duo with Nova Scotia and Australian back stories, resulting in a musical mix of folk, rock, and a little bit of blues. David Farrell is an accomplished guitarist previously part of the Australian rock circuit touring and playing with various bands. Janet Mills comes from a maritime kitchen party background, and plays mandolin, mandola, and piano (but not all at the same time). Strong melodies about cold weather, jerks of the world, and other Canadian conundrums are infused with quirky humour and rich harmonies for a sound something to the effect if the Kinks jammed with Fleetwood Mac using only acoustic instruments in a folksy type backdrop. Their latest album released March 25, 2017 called ‘Folkin Rock for Rockin Folk’ has been largely inspired by western Canada. Songs on this album draw from the somewhat bluesy experience that embodies the isolated feeling of rural communities in ‘She’d Come From Away’, to the upbeat faster pace used to describe best friends and sister card players in ‘Snoop Sisters’, to the beautiful guitar and mandolin story song of starting over in life in ‘Late Bloomer’, stories are woven into rich engaging songs that are both melodic and captivating for the listener.
