GrassRoots Regina is pleased to present Newfoundland’s young traditional singer Matthew Byrne in concert.

Byrne’s music offers tasteful and honest interpretations of traditional folk music delivered with polished guitar work and powerful vocals.

Matthew Byrne was born into a family of music makers from Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, and his repertoire is heavily influenced by this unique singing tradition. It is a tradition that thrives on the song - the weaving of a great story with a beautiful melody - and Matthew’s music reminds us how satisfying traditional songs can be when stripped down to these basic elements. His understanding of the ebb and flow of a narrative, his superb musicianship and his clean, clear tenor voice all contribute to the splendour of his music.

Byrne’s music has traveled well beyond the rugged shores of his Newfoundland home since his 2010 debut album, Ballads. Touring as both a solo artist and as a bouzouki player and vocalist with The Dardanelles, he has graced major festival stages worldwide. With his second album, Hearts & Heroes, receiving Traditional Recording of the Year at the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards, Byrne has established himself as one of Canada’s most authentic and vital traditional voices.

Byrne released his highly anticipated third album, Horizon Lines, on August 11, 2017. This newest collection of traditional material explores a unique repertoire of songs from both sides of the Atlantic and continues Byrne’s journey through his own unique musical lineage.

Kara Golemba's guitar-wrapped poetry is a blend of folk, roots and country. Her honeyed voice can be sweet and charming or powerfully raised to rattle the teacups.
