The group was originally formed in Nova Scotia in 1969. The cover, You Could Have Been a Lady, was a phenomenal hit for the band. Their third album, Electric Jewels featured such classic songs as Weeping Widow, Just Like That and Lady Run Lady Hide.

Roller, from the album First Glance, remained on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart for 11 weeks while First Glance stayed on Billboard's 200 Album chart for 11 weeks. In 1981, The Nature Of The Beast, became their greatest success with hits Just Between You and Me. Released in 1993, Attitude was their first studio release in 10 years and went Gold in Canada, driven by the hit If You Believe In Me. In 2006, the group released their 16th studio album, Roughly Speaking.

In 2009, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and also received The Lifetime Achievement Award. The following year, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Juno Awards.
