SASKMUSIC AND JAZZFEST REGINA PRESENT:
CLASSIC JAZZ STYLINGS with Alex Pangman

Creative City Centre
1843 Hamilton St, Regina SK
Thursday, June 18
6:00–7:30PM

SaskMusic is pleased to partner with JazzFest Regina to present ‘Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing’, Alex Pangman in an exciting and intimate presentation.

Finding solace at a young age in Mildred Bailey and the vocal work of Louis Armstrong, Alex Pangman also found her calling. Her natural vocal abilities and obsessive, deep appreciation for that bygone era have earned her a place in our nation’s heart. She’s not old fashioned, though. Pangman is a vivacious performer who retains creative control of all her work: carefully choosing her repertoire, composing original material, assembling her backing band and co-producing much of her recent recorded output. Rather than some casual throwback, Pangman delivers a unique, deliberate reinterpretation of one of North America’s most fertile, timeless eras. The Toronto-based songstress released her latest collection of material, titled “new” on November 4, 2014 on Justin Time records.  The album, recorded in the wild n’ wonderful city of New Orleans, features entirely fresh material, but mines the same 1930s fertile soil for material as her preceding album, “33”. Throughout her vibrant career, Pangman has been nominated for multiple awards, including Songwriter of the Year and Vocalist of the Year by the National Jazz Awards, and won a Genie for Best Original Song. She has accomplished all of this and more while battling lung disease and enduring two double lung transplants.

Alex, with bandmates Chris Banks (bass), Glen Anderson (drums), Peter Hill (piano) and Ross Wooldridge (clarinet and tenor sax) will lead a discussion on vocal techniques and unique performance practices using live examples and personal stories.  Attendees will be encouraged to spur the discussion with questions related to composing music, improvisation, and general stage strategies to help artists deliver an engaging performance.

SaskMusic invites performers and fans alike to attend this free event. Please pre-register by contacting SaskMusic: info@saskmusic.org or call 1-306-347-0676.

Later that evening, Alex and her band will perform as part of the JazzFest Regina lineup at Crave Kitchen and Wine Bar. Backed by a quartet of sentimental gentleman, Pangman’s performance is a sure bet to please all generations of jazz fans. Tickets for the show will be available shortly through www.jazzregina.ca.
