“FROM SELF-MANAGED TO MANAGED" MUSIC BUSINESS PANEL

Presented by Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI), SaskMusic and Creative Saskatchewan

7pm Friday, April 17, 2015
Ramada Hotel, Maple Room, Regina SK

Now, more than ever before, it appears that artists are spending much of their time running their businesses. This panel will address and discuss the new reality that artists must not only be creative, but to also have a mind for business. There's a lot to learn, from setting up your business structure, to understanding taxes and budgets, to preparing yourself for the reality that in today's industry, managers are looking for "Export Ready" product and artists.

This panel will provide self-managed artists and emerging artist managers with information on negotiating the path to a successful career in music from day one. CMI’s Vel Omazic and Liam Killeen will offer insight on what it means to manage your music business efficiently and effectively.

Topics covered in this panel will include:

  • Understanding what it means to be “Export Ready”
  • Operating your career as a business
  • How to appeal to managers
  • Pitching to potential partners such as managers, agents, publishers, labels, promoters, etc.

This panel is the open-to-all kick off event to the three-day professional development “Artist Entrepreneur Bootcamp” (also presented by Canada’s Music Incubator, SaskMusic and Creative Saskatchewan) for which 15 artists are being selected through a separate submission process. The Bootcamp is a condensed version of CMI’s 10-week Artist Entrepreneur program, which mentors aspiring artists to not only survive, but to thrive in today’s music industry.

Immediately following the event, SaskMusic will be hosting an open networking mixer and meet-and-greet with our new Executive Director, Mike Dawson, 9-11pm.

Panelists of the “Self-Managed to Managed” music business panel in Regina are:

Vel Omazic, Vice President of Canada’s Music Incubator, and Education

Vel brings over 20 years of experience to Coalition Music where he spearheads the development, direction and delivery of Canada’s Music Incubator’s Artist Entrepreneur and Tour & Tech Program, and various high school programs. He joined Coalition Music in 2010 after serving as the Vice President of National Promotion and Media Relations at Sony Music Canada for a decade.

Liam Killeen, Artist Manager Associate

As the day-to-day manager of Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, Faber Drive, These Kids Wear Crowns, Treble Charger, and Greig Nori, Liam is dedicated to creating new and exciting opportunities for the artists he works with.

We thank Creative Saskatchewan and The SOCAN Foundation for their support of this event.
