FACTOR Jury Accreditation Process: All FACTOR jurors have to be accredited before participating on a FACTOR jury. There is a simple form to be completed and you must also provide a brief bio relating to your jury experience. We ask all those interested in being a FACTOR juror in the future to complete the accreditation process now. It’s online at www.factor.ca/Juries.aspx. You just need to set up a profile on their website, or use the one that you have if you’ve recently applied to FACTOR programs. Once accredited, you’re good for three years.

FACTOR Deadlines covering April 1, 2010 - March 31, 2011

Demo Award Program: Deadline October 15/10. This program assists new artists, professional songwriters (who are members of a performing rights organization) and publishers with the production of their songs on a high quality demo recording, as well as basic press kit expenses, to enhance their career. Applicants must provide strategic goals and merits of the project with their application. Applicants may apply for up to $2,000 which represents 75% of their total eligible budget.

Songwriter’s Workshop & Seminar: Deadline August 31/10. This program offers financial assistance for a professional songwriter, with a membership to a performing rights organization, to attend workshops and seminars. Applicants may apply for up to $750 which represents 75% of their total eligible budget. Applicants must provide strategic merits and goals of participation in the workshop.

Juried Sound Recording Program: Deadline October 29/10. This program will assist artists and labels by partially financing the production costs of sound recordings or music DVD’s for commercial release. Applicants may apply for up to $25,000 for those who meet FACTOR’s distribution criteria (or $2,500 per track), and $15,000 for those who don’t meet FACTOR distribution criteria (or $1,500 per track). Applicants may request up to 75% of their total eligible budget. You are required to include strategic merits and goals of the project in your marketing plan. Applicants may apply to create singles or a full album.

Marketing & Promotion For Non-FACTOR Supported Sound Recordings: Deadline October 29/10. This program is to support the marketing and promotion of sound recordings for which FACTOR did not provide financial assistance towards the production costs. Applicants may use their marketing funds to cover basic marketing, touring, showcasing and video production expenses. Applicants must apply no later than 12 months following the domestic release date of the sound recording. To be eligible to apply for funding, the sound recording must have achieved a significant level of success through sales/radio airplay activity. It is intended to provide support to those artists whose career is moving forward. A maximum of 25% can be used for non-Canadian initiatives. FACTOR may fund up to 50% of your Total Eligible Budget + administrative flat fee to a maximum of $20,000. There is a very limited budget allocated to this program. Funding is in the form of a grant.

Marketing & Promotion for all FACTOR Supported Sound Recordings: Deadlines September 15, November 15/10. This program is to assist artists and labels with their marketing and promotional initiatives for FACTOR supported sound recordings. Applicants may use their marketing funds to cover basic marketing, touring, showcasing and video production expenses. A maximum of 25% can be used for non-Canadian initiatives. FACTOR may fund up to 50% or 74% of your Total Eligible Budget + administrative flat fee. Applicants must include the strategic merits and goals of their marketing initiatives with the application. Direct Board Approval Sound Recordings: Deadlines August 31, November 30/10. The Direct Board Approval program provides funding to support the production of recordings by Canadian artists that are signed to Canadian owned and controlled record labels that have a proven track record.

Video Program: Deadlines September 15, November 15/10.The Video Program provides funding for the production of music videos to support currently released albums by Canadian artists. Applicants must have a minimum of 2,000 confirmed units sold to apply to this program. Applicants that have sold in excess of 2,000 confirmed units are eligible to apply for a maximum of $5,000 or $20,000 which represents 75% of the Total Eligible Budget + administrative flat fee. Applicants with Sound Recordings that have sold between 1,000 and 1,999 confirmed units are eligible to apply for a maximum of $5,000 which represents 75% of the Total Eligible Budget + Applicants must include, in their marketing plan, the strategic merits and goals of the video.

Domestic & International Tour Support:
Deadlines September 30, November 30/10; January 31/11. The Tour Support Program’s objective is to support domestic and foreign touring activities by Canadian artists and to contribute to the development of the Canadian music industry both domestically and internationally. Applicants must have a maximum of 2,000 confirmed units to apply to this program. The maximum amount of funding available is $15,000 per tour, domestic or international representing 75% of the Total Eligible Budget + administrative flat fee. The tour must be resulting in a cash shortfall to be eligible for funding. Applicants must provide the strategic merits and goals of the tour in their application.

Domestic & International Showcase Support:
Deadlines October 15/10; January 17/11. The Showcase Support Program’s objective is to support Canadian artists with a strong potential for results at professional music industry organized showcases and to contribute to the development of the Canadian music industry both domestically and internationally. The maximum amount of funding available is $2,000 for all domestic showcases, and $4,000 for all international showcases representing 75% of the Total Eligible Budget + administrative flat fee. Applicants must provide specific details as to the strategic merits of the showcase, as the Board of Directors considers each application on an individual basis.

Domestic & International Business Development: Deadlines August 16, October 15, November 30/10; January 17/11. The Domestic and International Business Development Program was developed to increase the competitive appeal of Canadian music products domestically and internationally. A strong domestic and international presence is essential to building a healthy Canadian independent sound recording industry. Funding is available for participation in domestic and international marketing for record companies, management companies, music distributors and music publishers. Applicants may request up to 50% of their total eligible budget to a maximum of $20,000.

Label, Manager & Distributor Business Development Support: Deadlines have passed. The Label, Manager and Distributor Business Development Program was developed to strengthen Canadian labels, artist management companies and music distributors. Funding is available for initiatives that will help strengthen the company, including memberships to relevant organizations, development of databases, subscriptions to trade publications and initiatives that would support the marketing and promotion of the company. Please contact the office for information regarding, deadlines, FACTOR may provide a contribution to a maximum of $20,000 per fiscal year which represents 50% of the Total Eligible Budget.

Collective Initiatives Support: Deadlines - September 15, November 15/10; January 31/11. The Collective Initiatives Program offers funding for educational and professional information sessions or seminars and regional and national initiatives that promote various sectors of the Canadian music industry simultaneously. This program was also developed to help create opportunities for Canadian music artists, creators and entrepreneurs to gain greater profile at home and abroad as well as on digital platforms. The programs provided under this application provide financial assistance for the following types of initiatives:

  1.  Music Conferences and Awards Shows that are provincial, regional or national in scope.
  2. Music Showcases for the Development of Canadian Artists from Official Language Minority Communities (OLMC); (for FACTOR’s purposes this includes Canadian English language speaking Artists currently residing in the province of Quebec).
  3. Music Showcases for the Development of Export Ready Canadian Artists.
  4.  Marketing of Canadian music on digital platforms.

Applicants can apply to one or more of the funding streams provided through this program, or any of FACTOR’s other programs to support the overall initiative. The total request from FACTOR cannot exceed 50% of the total eligible budget.

Emerging artist Sound Recording Program: Deadlines September 15, December 15/10. The Emerging Artist Sound Recording Loan has been created for those grassroots artists whose careers are emerging at the National & International levels. The purpose is to provide a strong financial commitment to each project by funding the sound recording and marketing and promotion respectively, to help artists take their careers to the next level. FACTOR may fund up to 50% of the Total Eligible Budget

Info at www.videofact.ca. Online applications available at http://apply.muchfact.ca. MuchFACT considers applications requesting co-financing for music videos, websites and EPKs. Successful applicants receive awards of up to 50% of production costs to a max. $25,000 for videos and a max. $3500 for websites and EPKs. Deadlines September 2, October 21/10; January 6/11.

Video (VideoFACT) - contributes to the growth of the Cdn. music video industry and encourages new and established Cdn. artists to cultivate their musical talents through music video. As of Sept 1/09, MuchFACT can no longer accept applications for French language music videos; these will now be administered by MaxFACT.

Web (PromoFACT) - Stimulate the production of new websites (or upgrades). Artists who are likely to be programmed on MuchMoreMusic (as opposed to MuchMusic, MusiquePlus or Musimax) are eligible.

EPK (PromoFACT EPK) - Applicants may apply for funding towards traditional EPKs as well as digital EPKs, digital music videos and other digital music-related content intended solely for viral distribution. Intended to promote current, active or forthcoming sound recordings as opposed to catalogue titles. Artists who are likely to be programmed on MuchMoreMusic (as opposed to MuchMusic, MusiquePlus or Musimax) are eligible.

Please note that effective immediately, artists applying for PromoFACT funding may apply for website or epk or viral video funding at any one deadline. Artists may not submit more than one application to the PromoFACT program at any one deadline. As well, please note that you may not resubmit the same song more than once to the viral video program. Independent Artists Grant Program:
Deadline October 1/10. Supports the creation, development or performance of new work in any art form; professional development for artists; and research in the arts. Contact Kathy Allen, Performing Arts Consultant, 306-964-1166 or kathy@artsboard.sk.ca.

Creative Grants – Assist artists working independently or collaboratively to create new work in any art form, or to develop and perform work. May include professional development, research or travel components. Established artists, max. $17,000. Emerging artists, max. $6000.

Professional Development Grants
– Assist artists to undertake study in a formal setting such as the Banff Centre, or through an informal arrangement such as an apprenticeship/mentorship. Not intended for students undertaking basic training, but for professional artists taking advantage of specialized professional development to advance their practice. Established artists, max. $7500. Emerging artists, max. $4000

Research Grants – Assist artists to pursue research in the arts such as general or independent research, and research on new techniques or technologies. Research related to a specific creative project should be included in the Creative Grant application. Established artists, max. $5000. Emerging artists, max. $2000.

Travel Grants - Assistance to attend events or to take part in activities occurring outside Saskatchewan that provide for discussion or presentation of work, present a unique opportunity to enhance careers, or which are of benefit to the arts in Saskatchewan.

Project Grant Program:
Deadline October 15/10. Supports diverse artistic activities that connect and engage Saskatchewan’s professional artists, people and communities. Contact Kathy Allen, Performing Arts Consultant, 306-787-4056 or Kathy@artsboard.sk.ca.

ArtConnect Grants - Contribute to the specific costs of presenting productions, performances or exhibitions to Saskatchewan audiences; or for commissioning Saskatchewan artists to develop new work in the arts. Max. $5000.

ArtInquire Grants - Contribute to the specific costs of securing a professional artist or artists for a community of learners who wish to further their development in any art form and who do not currently have access to the proposed instruction. Max. $5000.

ArtVenture Grants - Contribute to the specific costs of engaging a Saskatchewan artist or artists to create art projects for presentation to the public. In most cases, artists who previously applied to the Independent Artists Grant Program as a collective now will apply for an ArtVenture Grant. Max. $10,000.

Creative Partnership Grant (replaced Artist in Residence Grant): Deadlines: Explorations November 16/10, Innovations – Deadline has passed. Provides support to Saskatchewan communities, and supports residencies in workplaces, institutions and K-12 school communities. 306-964-1165 or 1-800-667-7526.

Premier’s Centennial Arts Scholarships: Deadline has passed. Assistance to Sask. students undertaking training for a career as a professional artist. Studies may be in any fine arts discipline in an accredited post-secondary institution or a recognized fine arts training program. Max: full-time studies $2500, part-time studies $1000. Culture on the Go: Touring and Market Access Grant: Deadline has passed. Helps Saskatchewan artists to further their careers and share their art, music or performances with people in our province and beyond. Funding levels for successful projects will be determined through the assessment process and the availability of funds.

SaskFestivals Grant: SaskFestivals Project Grant (Tier 3): Deadline October 15/10: Supports and encourages eligible Sask. festivals to celebrate community activity and spirit; encourage community engagement, tourism and economic activity; enhance the positive impact and benefits of festivals in the community and province; provide high quality experiences for audiences, artists, participants and volunteers throughout Sask.; and heighten the awareness and appreciation of the arts and artists in Sask. Max. $5000.

NOTE: Updated SaskFestivals Project Grant (Tier 3) Application Package will be available September 1, 2010.

The Indigenous Pathways Initiatives: Deadline has passed. The Indigenous Pathways Initiative – Arts Grant Program is designed to increase participation in, and access to public funding by Indigenous artists in the province. The Indigenous Pathways Initiative seeks to address these issues while also increasing public access to high-quality Indigenous art.

Aboriginal Arts & Culture Leadership Grant: Deadline October 15/10. The Aboriginal Arts and Culture Leadership grant is now administered by SaskCulture. Aboriginal Arts & Culture Leadership Grant: Deadlines Apr 15, Oct 15/10. Aims to develop Aboriginal arts and culture leadership at the individual, group and community levels. The program builds capacity in Aboriginal communities through the development of arts and culture leaders. This creates cultural opportunities that will enhance skill development, personal growth and positive lifestyles. Max. 90% of eligible expenses for a min. of $500 to max. of $25,000. SOCAN Foundation

Funding is generally intended for not-for-profit events and projects and supports a small percentage of applicant’s overall budget. Proposals are welcome for projects concerning the Cdn. creative music community that are local, regional, national or int’l in scope. Preference will be given to events or projects beneficial to several SOCAN members or to organizations/institutions, rather than to individuals.

Publication Grants: Deadline Jan 15, Aug 16. To assist with the publication of books and journals that are in the interest of Canadian composers, songwriters and lyricists.

Education Grants: Deadline Jan 15, Aug 16. To individuals and organizations for initiatives concerning the creation and protection of musical works (e.g. workshops, master classes, projects in schools). Private studies not eligible.

Event and Project Grants: Jan 15,Aug 16. Funding is provided to concert music, popular music and film music organizations, including concert music festivals. The Foundation will consider special initiatives which may not be described in the criteria but which meet the Foundation’s mandate.

Concert Music Promotion Program: Aug 15. This program supports the distribution of recordings of music by Canadian concert music (classical) composers to broadcasters outside Canada in order to encourage radio performances. Support is available for promoting both physical CDs and digital sound files. For digital sound file projects, please contact the SOCAN Foundation.

Composer Outreach Residencies with Canadian Ensembles: Deadlines Jan 15, March 31, Sept 30. Designed to bring together SOCAN composers with concert presenters to work toward increasing the interest in and support for contemporary music and its performance.

International Showcasing: Provides travel assistance to individuals, duos or bands that are specifically invited to showcase at int'l music conferences (outside Canada) that are “sanctioned” each year by the Foundation. Check www.socanfoundation.ca for a list of those priority events (includes SXSW, CMJ, NEMO).

SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers: Deadline April 15.
This composers’ competition is designed to recognize the creative talent of Canadian concert music composers under 30 years of age. A total of $29,250 is available annually. The competition is open to SOCAN members and to composers who are not members of a performing rights organization but are Canadian citizens.

Canada Council for the Arts

Please note that where deadlines have passed, they generally will re-occur at that date next year. Funding is not intended for "popular" forms of music (pop, rock, country, etc.) – seek FACTOR funding for these.


Grants to Professional Musicians: Deadline Mar 1 Nov 1/10. Offers emerging, mid-career and established musicians and composers opportunities to pursue individual artistic development. Classical music and Non-classical music (popular traditions) of all world cultures.

Career Development Program: Deadline October 1/10.
Annual grants to agents and managers, and project grants to artists. Assists Canadian professional musicians/managers/agents in the development of artists’ live performance and touring careers (i.e. management grants and promotional tool development grants).

Travel Grants to Professional Musicians: No deadlines, but you must apply at least 8 weeks in advance. Assists with opportunities to travel to occasions important to their artistic development.

Residences and Commissioning of Canadian Compositions: Deadline September 15/10. Assists in the professional development of Canadian composers and conductors through residencies, and encourages the creation of new works by Canadian composers through commissions.

Music Festivals Programming Project: Deadline Has Passed.
Assists Canadian non-profit music festivals to produce specific projects within their overall festival programming. It is intended to support original and interpretive programming involving Canadian artists that includes elements of artistic risk and vision, and that challenges audiences.

Music Festival Travel Grants: Deadline Has Passed.
Grants to assist professional Canadian musicians to perform at festivals, outside their province or territory of residence, at which they have not previously performed.

Audience and Market Development Grants: No deadline, must apply at least 6 weeks before project start date. Travel grants to assist Canadian professional artists to develop their careers, and reach new audiences and markets in Canada and/or internationally.

Music Touring Grants: Deadline
  • 1 June , for tours occurring between the following September and April 
  • 1 December, for tours occurring between the following April and October
 Provides assistance for Canadian and foreign professional music artists who wish to tour within Canada.

Aboriginal Peoples Music Program: Deadline March 1/10. Supports activities that contribute to the career and artistic development of Aboriginal musicians, and to the continued vitality of Aboriginal music. Activities funded through this program develop professional skills of Aboriginal music artists; strengthen organizations dedicated to Aboriginal music; and support other activities that restore, preserve, invigorate and raise the profile of Aboriginal music and musicians.

Artists and Community Collaboration Program: Deadline February 1/10.
Provides an opportunity for communities to express themselves through creative collaborations with leading professional artists. Artists and community collaboration is an arts process that actively involves the work of professional artists and non-arts community members in creative and collaborative relationships. Priority will be given to projects that involve youth and arts education.

Visiting Foreign Artists Program: Deadline June 1/10 .
Provides grants to Canadian professional arts organizations to encourage visits by individual professional foreign artists of outstanding achievement. While in Canada, the visiting foreign artist is to direct workshops and teach master classes for professional artists.

Professional Choir Program: Deadline has Passed.
Contributes to the activities of professional Canadian choirs, including community choirs that meet the eligibility criteria, from any cultural background.

CMT Video Advantage Program:  Applications should come from the copyright holder of the potential video (i.e. artist, management, investors, record companies, video directors or producers). The song must be on a sound recording available for sale. VAP considers all forms of country or country music-related videos in both English and French, and encourages applications that reflect the multi-cultural, multi-racial nature of Canadian society.

Applicants demonstrating support systems in place to take advantage of the opportunities provided by a hit video (i.e. marketing plan and release schedule, nationwide distribution, financial investment, strong management) are more likely to be supported. Int’l Touring/Showcasing: Allows qualifying artists to apply for int’l tour funding, showcasing and promotional appearances independently of their Cdn. label and without having to make a significant investment.
